I have to agree, I am very pissed. Sounds like they even had a recording of the event.
I wrote a snail mail to them since it is usually taken more seriously. Even sent the link to several friends.

That would be a shame, if true, but knowing CNN I would like to hear the other side of the story before I got all wound up about it.

I felt the same way, but it has been on tv and all over the place....I agree with you though, check it out! That is why I have given you the addresses, ask them, get both sides of the story! You will find a video on the whole insident and that will explain it all.

The dog was a pit bull mix. Looking at the videotape, the dog jumps out of the car and runs at the officer holding the shotgun. I would have shot the thing, too.

I guess we all see it differently. At least we are able to see both sides of the story.

oh also, I'm sure after the family told them to close the door and there was a dog in there and the cops wouldn't let them or they them selves wouldn't close the door to stop the dog from running out in the first place.
Proper procedure would have been to secure the animals until Animal Control officers could be dispatched (close the car door). By that time the whole thing could have been figured out by running the tag through the DMV. Hell even if he DID lose his wallet his WIFE and KID were in the car. It boils down to a couple local yokels with itchy trigger fingers doing a felony stop which they'd more than likly NEVER encountered before. I hope the Smoak's sue the hell out of the City and State. Paranoid Hillbillies:rolleyes:

Last year in a neighboring community, the town's police chief responded to a 'nuisance' dog. He spotted a dog that match the description in a backyard, so he decided he had best investigate. To get in the back yard, he had to open the fence gate and once he was inside the fenced in yard he said the dog began to aggresively run towards him, so he pulled out his pistol and shot the dog dead. Turns out, the dogs owner was standing on the back porch and had just let the dog outside moments earlier.
Needless to say, the chief had plenty of questions to answer and ultimately was fired from his position.

THe problem with Police in the US(especially patrol police) is that they are over reacting towards some situations, have the attitude of " I am the boss". Shooting in any case unless proven harmful is totally unnecessary, in many other countried, cops will have to fire a warning shot before firing the actual shot to surpress the subject. I hate it when they insist of having highway pursuits. They think it's cool, heroic, but it's actually stupid. Clever ambush and planning will reduce risk to themselves and the innocents, and it's also those pursuits that pushes the subject further than what he could have just done.

You know being form the great state of Tennessee I will have to say that not all of our law enforcement are "Paranoid Hillbillies"!
This situation, IMO was handled in an incompatant manner and have made a mockery of the logo on their Patrol cars that state "Protect and Serve"! All the officers I know of in this state carry pepper spray on their belt. Why wasn't this used? I will also contend that any law officer worth his salt would have enough common sense to see this wasn't the "hold up the corner store" type! The officers involved in this episode where lacking in basic judgment and HUMAN compassion!
O before I forget common sense isn't that common now is it?
