Triathlon - in race nutrition - just not going well

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

hey there everyone, just completed my first event of the season (Galena Triathlon in IL) and i have a question. In the last year i've really begun taking things a little more seriously, training regim, what i'm eating, general race prep, but this seems to be eluding me...

I just can't seem to find a decent energy source for Oly + length events that my stomach will happily deal with. Sprints are fine, but any longer and i need that boost, i've tried both Gu and Clif gels and both leave me feeling awful (like i'm about to throw up) during the run (and running much slower than i've set myself up for) and yes i have washed them down with enough water and i've tried taking them in very small increments

Are all these products roughly the same? or should i just keep trying them all to see if any work with my body? I've read that some people mix them with their drinks to make them easier to get down which i guess is the next step, but does anybody have any recommendations.

I'm thinking of stepping up to 1/2 IM next year, but if i don't crack this I don't see any easy way of making this work.

thanks

I've been using Hammer products (mostly Perpetuem, HEED, and Hammer Gel as far as food goes) for everything from 1 - 8 hours long and I don't think I've ever had a problem. They don't have any fructose, which some folks don't react well to.

I use Hammer stuff also; same as above. Even for breakfast. I've learned not to mix with solid food, else I get the gastric distress.

Water + 4 scoops of Perpetuem + 5 servings of Espresso Hammergel in a water bottle is enough calories for almost four hours. You can use one product line exclusively an acheive the same caloric requirements, but it tasted better for me to mix and match. Plus, 3 Endurolytes an hour.

I use PR powder mixed with water to make kind of a milkshake drink that I can take on my bike (Actually, I mix it with crushed ice so that it stays cool). I stick mainly to liquid fuel.

thanks everyone, i have a long brick this weekend that i'm going to really push myself on to try and recreate this....but will begin the process of using new products one by one to see how they work.
