I have used for some time now and recommend the Conti Ultra Gaterskin in 700x28. I just picked up a set of Bontrager Race Lite 700x28 Hard Case tires on sale they have 3 types of flat protection built into them and I am going to give them a try. The Conti Ultra Gater Skins also have flat protection built into them so I will be able to compare them against the new Bontrager tires in performace and flat protection. After I put a few miles on the Bontragers I should have a good idea which set of tires have performed the best over all.

I have the Bontragers on my T2000. They seem fine, but are much harder and thicker than the racing rubber (Michelin Pro Race) on my single bike, and are no better than any other tyre in terms of cut resistance to the tread and picking up glass. They are also a bit dead-feeling and not grippy enough, particularly in slow-speed sharp turns when it's damp and uphill. Upside is that they tend not to wear much, which is good.

For short sporty rides I am going to try some 25mm Pro Race tyres plus lighter inner tubes, but as do-it-all tyres, the Bontis will stay on until I wear them out.

I used the HardCase tires on my racing bike (23mm) for winter training. They are stout, but I thought the ride quality was poor. As a compromise tire, one that has good protection and rides well, I suggest the Specialzed Roubaix tire. ONly available in 24mm (yes, 24...) but a nice tire for high performance tandem riding.

Let us know how the 28mmHardCase rides.

Have used all kinds of tires in our many years of tandeming.
Currently ride the Maxxis Detonater (front) and Refuse (rear) and are quite pleased with the rideability and tire life. No tire is puncture proof, so we put up with the occasion flat.

PUt the 23mm Hardcase on the tandem over the weekend: they're a great tandem tire. The things that made me dislike them on my racing bike are benefits on the tandem.

In my never ending quest for cheapness I've been trying Serfas tires lately. I've got the Seca RS in a 23mm on my singles and have been very pleased, so I'm trying the wire beaded ones in a 28mm on my tandem. Only got about 400 miles on them so I can't report on how well they wear, but they ride well and I've gotten no flats so far. Next week I'll be throwing them on a single and then taking that to New England for a vacation, and I'll no doubt succumb to the allure of dirt roads while I'm there. Should be a good test of cut resistance. :D

(UPDATE on Bontrager Tire,)

We tried the Bontrager 700x28C Hard Case tires on several long rides, they ride a lot more dull than the Conti Ultra Gater Skin even though they did perform ok( I did get one goat head flat that was a slow leak and went flat after we got home) But we all know a goat head will give any tire hell. After trying the Bontrager and the Conti Ultra Gater Skin I have to say the Conti tires feel a lot more lively and corner better at high speeds and weigh in at 30 grams per tire lighter with good flat protection. I run the foldable Conti 4 Season tire in 700x25C on my road bike and love them. I plan on giving them a try on the Tandem in 700x28C next time around.:D
