Is 42 cm. the only size for these bars?? Benefit of heat treated vs. non?
you can get the heat treated kind here in 40 http://www.thebikebiz.com/product_p/trk-bar-nitto05.htm (expensive) but everywhere else seems to only have 42. i would reckon the heat treated version is stiffer.

I'm assuming by heat treatment they mean the steel has been tempered/quenched, resulting in a much stronger product. The other heat treatment process involves annealing the steel giving it more ductile (plastic) properties.
Heat treating can do several things depending on how the heat is applied and how the metal is quenched. Most likely the heat is first used to remove the stresses on the metal created by the fabrication of the bar, and second to make the bars stronger and stiffer. So, to make a long story short, the heat treated bars should be stiffer and possibly absorb more vibration.
The heat treated one is noticeably stiffer. The non-treated one is rather springy/flexy. It's definitely worth getting the heat treated one. They only come nowadays in 42's. At one point they were made in 40's but they were offered in a thinner tubing that tended to crack. The Nitto catalog only lists the 42's for the past 2-3 years.
These are great bars. Many more alternatives for hand positions, plus they take brakes really well (cyclocross top levers, regular road brake levers, or aero time trial bar levers).
I have an extra pair from a frame I just sold if you're interested. Mint/unused. Feel free to PM me.
