Does anyone know a good route from Chicago to Evanston. The start location is around Montrose and Damen (I plan to take Wilson over to the Lake Shore Trail) the end location is the Tech Building at Northwestern University, 2145 Sheridan Rd. I know to take the lake shore path as far north as it goes but it seems like the route gets a little complicated after that, with a lot of little twists and turns.

I realize that they've tried to make the path on low traffic streets but does anyone commute every day and have a faster route? Something that's more of a straight shot?

Thank you.

I googled and found a mapped route up the lake shore to the university. You are right, lots of twists and turns. If no one else answers just start riding looking for better ways until you get it the way you like.

I believe you can take Montrose east- when it gets close to the lakefront, it kind of curves and dumps you onto Wilson. You'll continue east on Wilson for a couple of blocks to Sheridan, and take a left on Sheridan. Take Sheridan all the way down.

You'll find that Sheridan does turn into Chicago for a bit, but if you keep going straight (northbound), it turns back into Sheridan. It's not that bad at all.

When I lived in Chicago I used Sheridan all the way up, it's not bad at all.

More of a straight shot would be to go east to Ashland and hang a left, and head north. Ashland merges with Clark just north of Andersonville. Stay on Clark to Howard. At Howard, when you cross over into Evanston, the street name changes to Chicago. (Tricky, ain't it--when you're IN Evanston you're ON Chicago). Stay on Chicago through downtown Evanston and it ends at Sheridan Rd. right at Northwestern's main campus. I ride this route twice a week or so from Wilmette to the Loop. The traffic can get a little hairy on the stretch from Andersonville up to where Ashland splits off again, but its better than Sheridan Rd. through Rodgers Park.

Walter.

I think I'll take the Lake Front Trail until Granville then westbound to Clark then northbound all the way to the Northwestern campus.

Has anyone taken this route? How are the roads? The traffic? The neighborhoods?

Thank you.

Oh that's not bad at all...just shoot up Clark. It gets a bit difficult near Ridge, but it's not so bad.

For my downtown -> Evanston trips I do the following..

whatever to Wells; wells -> Lincoln; lincoln -> southport; southport -> clark; clark all the way up.

enjoy!
