Bicycle Mechanics - Chain Linking - Newb Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I took my chain apart somewhere random and now I cant get it together. Do I need to buy a specific chain union that goes between the break or can I just ram that pin in there some how? Sorry for the newb question...

You need a chain tool to put the pin back in correctly. If it is a Shimano chain, you need a replacement pin. Do not reuse the old pin. You could also get a SRAM power link.

If it's a Shimano chain, then there is likely a replacement pin for it. If you try to reuse the pin you pushed out, the chain will be weaker at that point and may come apart under the right amount of stress over time.
Instead of a replacement pin you can purchase a master link that is specifically sized for your chain (i.e., Wipperman 8, 9, or 10 speed Connex link).
I couldn't get the pin back in with my chain tool. I have a link and I think Ill just take it down to a bike shop and get a master link or 2 (so I can add links). Thanks.
