Anyone here seen the movie "Over the Hedge"? It's a fantastic movie (funny and entertaining) and is all about American overconsumption. One of my favorite lines:

The main animal character is explaining what an SUV is to the other animals (a transport vehicle), and the other animals comment on how big it is, "Wow, that thing's enormous. How many people does it carry?" To which the main character replies:

"Usually...one."

LMAO!

Yes! I've seen it, and that was my reaction as well. The movie is hysterical, with a great message against suburbanism and overconsumption. I've been recommending it to everyone.

And yet they are marketing Over the Hedge toys and happy meals and every other product you can think of. Against overconsumption? I think not.

Well, think of it this way: the writers had a message that they wanted to get out and reach as many people as possible with. They knew the only way to do that was to compromise a bit and let the production company sell those toys, etc. In doing so, the movie is associated with some overconsumption/marketing problems, but the message reaches a whole new generation of kids who will hopefully take the message to heart (and possibly a few adults).
