Where can I find data about the distance between the home and work? I want to be able to show that most folks (percentage wise) live within a certain distance of their primary dwelling (house, car, bridge overpass, etc.) Thanks in advance!

I had heard that most folks live within 10 miles of work, and many live within 5 miles of work.

I want to be able to show that most folks (percentage wise) live within a certain distance of their primary dwelling  Um, most people live within distance 0 of their primary dwelling. Do you mean "work"? :)

Actually, I would be surprised if it turned out most Americans lived within 10 miles of work. But then what do I know? :)

The census bureau website has average commute time for cities, counties, and states. This might give you a general idea of the distances people live from work. I recently got a local job - my commute went from 1 hr to 1 minute. I no longer care if gas prices go sky high becuase I only fill up once a month or so.

Chephy, Yeah... that's what I meant!

MiRider: Same here. My last tank is still 1/4 full and it's been two months.

reason for the request: I'm having a *useless* argument and want to be right even though it will result in no change whatsoever in the other person's behavior. *sigh*.

I live 3.85 miles from work (by bike). It's about 3.5 miles by the typical car route, which is unpleasant for biking.

Both of my full and part time jobs are a 10 min walk from my house. one is to the left of my house the other to the right. Everything I need is within a 5-8 mile radius from my home. I have not left my zip code in 6 months.

I need to get out more......

I currently live about 8.5 miles from where I work. Supposedly, sometime in the next few years, my facility will relocate to within 6 miles or so of where I live. My husband and I both work at the same facility, with the same days off, and the same hours.

For Canada and the US, follow the link in this post (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=2562846&postcount=3). You want Figure 5, on page 270.

I think woodog wasn't asking about us but about people in general. How about the
Bureau of Transportation Statistics

http://www.transtats.bts.gov/
Specifically the Census Transportation Planning packages.
Here is a description of the journey to work tables.

The CTPP 2000 Part 3 - JOURNEY-TO-WORK (JTW) tables provide detailed information about the commute trip from home to work. These tables include the following summary levels: State, State-County, State-County-County Subdivision, State-County-County Subdivision Place, State-Place, State-County-Tract, and Detailed State and MPO geography tables.

Doesn't this sound like the kind of data he wanted to sink his teeth into?

Depending on the trffic lights, it's about a 10 minute walk to work for me. I'm guessing about 1/3 of a mile, give or take a bit. The only thing I don't use my bike for is commuting, as it's almost to much hassle to grab my gear, ride in, stash my gear at work, and park the bike. I've done it twice, and doubt I'll try it agin with this job.

My office is between 4.8 and 6 miles from home, depending on which route I take.

I found this on one of these threads, thought it helpful/fun :)

You might look around for the average distance of all automotive trips too. I seem to recall that it is about 3 miles. Just dont remember where the data comes from.

I'm self-employed and work from home, mostly. I go to one client site 5 miles away twice a week, and have a part-time job (for the purposes of sanity) about 2 miles away. A circuit between all three is about 10 miles. I've been thinking of longer routes because I feel like I'm just getting warmed-up when I arrive at my destination. Especially on days like today with a 20 mph tailwind.

7.6 miles from work -- I know of 5 people at work that are under the 5 mile mark and another 5 that are in the 10 mile range, the rest I am not sure. I keep trying but so far no one has taken up the bike commuting challenge. :(

5 miles in each direction 3 days a week, 7 miles in each direction 2 days a week.

I know of no other people who ride a bike to either of the places where I work, but once in a while there is a lady's walmart style bike in the bike rack but I have yet to identify who rides it... i've been told its a lady (duh). lol But I have no idea how far she rides... either way I have not seen it there for 5 months.

I know of two people in my office that live within 10 miles. Most are 10+ miles while I and another lady are 30+ miles.
Housing prices are positively horrific near our office park.
However, I'm just stupid for letting my wife pick where we live. Nice suburb and all but the commute by bike takes a long time.

So I moved.

Depending on day, one office is 2 blocks away and the other is about 1.5 miles. It's always nice to be able to get up half an hour before work, throw on some clothes and pedal like a bat out of hell to get to work, AND show up 10 minutes early!

Been semi car-free for 2 weeks now. Car sits in driveway and barely moves, but I just can't bear to part with her...we've had so many years and wonderful miles together. Oh well, once I move to Paradise (aka Canada) maybe then I'll consider letting her go...

I sold my truck a month ago. I have a 17-mile round trip commute; we'll try it for the summer. We now have no car payments. Selling the truck paid off our other car! So now I have no insurance payments, no upkeep on the truck, and our driveway is now desolate. I also ride a fixed-gear to work. I get my exercise on the way, so I don't have to have a gym membership. It all seems too good to be true!

Work is less than a mile...My town is only 3.5 miles by 4 miles. The next nearest city of size is 50 miles. I can go anywhere in town by bike to do shopping etc with the burley trailer. Two supermarkets are 1.5 miles from home the other is way way over on the other side of town 3.5 miles away. My town has 3 stoplights. (census 7500)

I'm looking for a new apartment... I'm deliberately looking at places farther out from where I am now, just so I have an excuse to ride my bike farther!!!

Looking to maybe almost double my commute from 8.5 miles(one way) to around 15-16 each way.

I don't get this. I understand wanting to ride more. I have a measly little 3 mile (one way) commute. I often stretch out the ride there or home to 10, 20 or more miles. That's an option that's always available to me. But I'm grateful that if I want or need to get there right away, I can.

When my bike was in the shop for 5 days, I walked to and from work. Right now I'm rehabbing from some injuries. I can barely survive the 3 mile trip in low gears. But if I had to go much further, I wouldn't be able to ride at all. I would have to take the bus, since my injuries rule out walking that far too.

Depends on the route I took, 4.0 to 4.2 miles from work. Most days I rode home for lunch, so was able to get 16 commuting miles daily for the 2 roundtrips. Beginning in April, I retired, so now I live 0 miles from work! (still have a honey do list)
