For whatever the reason, a lot of work piled on me tonight. I've got a good amount done, but heres what I have left to do:

I need to write the rough draft of an english paper.
I need to do a lab report for chemistry, a homework assignment (balancing oxidation reactions), and studying for a test.
I need to do a reasonably long ALgebra homeworksheet and study for a test.

Well I can only do two of the 3. Heres the thing, the whole junior class has some meeting during my english class, so he is only going to check off that we have the rough draft done due to time constraints. THis paper is a 10 pager.

Typically I do very well with chemistry tests and do not require much studying, but I have for whatever the reason not been able to focus on this oxidation unit, in particular, balancing oxidation reactions. I could probably use all of the study time I can get. BUt I am doing very well in there with a grade. One side of me says I want to keep that grade up and study. My english grade is a steady C, I dislike that class unlike any other english class. I've always liked english 'till this year. But this damn paper is like me asking him how the world is a giant capacitor. The answer is a mystery to him, and the answer he wants is a mystery to me.

Math has been making more sense, my grade has improved almost 2 letter grades. I would like to keep up the trend and do well on the last test of the quarter. But I feel reasonably confident on the material. Its graphing hyperbolas, parabolas, and an ellipse. A few other related cartesian plane functions also.

Also, I have a lab report due in chemistry tomorrow. THese are fairly signigicant portions of your grade.

I don't have time to do them all unless I stay up until late tonight, which I cannot do.

So I feel like I need to have a sacrificlal lamb for all of this to work. Do I do the english paper, and cut out all but one other assignment? Do I do as much of the other stuff as I can and not have my rough draft done?

You don't give enough info for a proper cost/benefit analysis, so I can't tell you. That said, don't tell us more info about your current situation. (Not now, anyway.) Use that time to get more of the work done instead. Get what you can get done done. Do whatever absolutely must be done. (Both homework-wise and otherwise.) Put off what you can put off if you truly have a time emergency. (For example, can the rough draft be done more quickly?) Prioritize your work and budget your effort. Stay up late if necessary. (You cannot stay up late tonight? Or you don't want to stay up late?) If absolutely necessary, make a judgment call as to what's the best thing to ignore. It may or may not be one of your homework tasks. Good luck. You can do it.

Jschen's your man.

If you do need explanations for anything about redox, I'll try to help. But do try to keep your head in your books and not waste too much time online. Figure out how math is taught in college some other time, for example. That's clearly a task that doesn't have to be done today.

Well I am doing the lab report now, this will be my last post on the forum for tonight probably. I've decided to not do the rough draft. It counts only as a homework.
I cannot stay up because I must be alert tomorrow first period. the #'s show that when I stay up late, first period tests do not go so well. First period is a test, I do not wish to not do well due to fatigue.

As for redox. I know Leo The Lion Goes Ger, the concept is fine. Balancing the equations though...is an another story. I have an idea of how to do it, but I do not feel I could easily balance a bunch of them no problem.

Balancing redox half equations:

If the same number of electrons is involved, just add the two half equations together.
If a different number of electrons is involved, multiply each half equation by the number of electrons involved on the other half equation, then add the two half equations together.

Example:

Mg --> Mg++ + 2e-
Al+++ + 3e- --> Al

Multiply the Mg eqn by 3 and the Al eqn by 2 and we now get:

3Mg --> 3Mg++ + 6e-
2Al+++ + 6e- --> 2Al

Adding the two together, we get:

3Mg + 2Al+++ --> 3Mg++ + 2Al

This trick makes these problems quick and painless. If you use it, though, promise to figure out (after your exam is fine) why it works.

Ah! Half reactions again. Thatmakes very good sense, thankyou jsChen. Starting chemistry work now, so I will put my new found knowledge to the test

Ah, Jschen you are awesome. I love that reaction.

I personally would not do the English, its more subjective. Do the math and science. :)

English this year is crap. This guy is a linguist at heart, and most people in his class seem to all want to major in english in college, they love this type of thing. They enjoy studying all these literary "isms". Me and the teacher see things very differently. A lot of times I feel like in there I am not really doing anything except producting some project for the sake of it. Its hard for me to make an analogy to what he does with concepts.
Maybe like when you learn a concept, like this movement of literature tends to have this characteristic, here is why. A lot of this I feel like there is only so much you can do with, like if the concept was a tap in metal, it has 'bottomed out'. But then this guy spends a week trying to tap it deeper than the hole allows, and honestly I just get bored. Its a shame because I have ALWAYS enjoyed english. Last year I had the option of taking hte honors level english class. I sure wish I could redo this year...

Reading that makes me feel so much better about my situation at school, maybe you just make it sound hard but your classes seem much more challenging then my classes. Tomorrow is the last day of school and right now all i have to worry about is a 2 page paper about what i learned in physics class and a math assingment on infinite geometric series (aka like the 3rd easiest math objective all year), zero 10 page papers or tes

my english class is a LOT of work. This guy has always taught at the college level, so he It's not anything shocking to him I guess. I guess this year has not been mentally very difficult, but I've had just a large quantity of work to do. Frustrating

Whiechever one counts the moust towards your grade?
Which ever ones you think you'll have the least chance of making up?
Which ever ones you have the least rapport with your professor?
