Post pictures (close-up if possible) of your top tube protector. Doesn't matter if it is a Kashimax or a homemade job....lets see them!

I'm in the process of making a bunch of pretty nice ones, comparable to reload or whatever. They'll be a reasonable price and at Avenue Cyclery in SF soon if you care.

I found a big old piece of thick (maybe 1/4 inch) rubber belt in my house and cut it down then taped it on w/ electrical tape.

Imagine a red bandana wrapped and tied around my top tube.
That's what I used to have, at least.

it doesnt look like your bars can even possibly hit your top tube. whats the point? p.s. wheres your brake lever?
steel top tube vs. face...
plus this is NJS stamped.
My friend used/uses a torn piece of champ grip. It was originally taped so that it read "HAM."
No but really, why do people put these on their bikes?

so your drop bars don't ding the top tube when it swings around.

katio - **** spraypaint job that chips whenever something touches it
to protect from dents/paintchips from handlebars and while locking up and to sit on (the reload et al)
imagine some extra padded bar tape wrapped in electrical tape. now imagine it on a bike. that's my tt protector. Right, exactly! $30 for an F'ing kashiwhat? Should be called a Cashy Max. It's a top tube protector, right? I'm using a piece of cinelli cork leftover. And the lectrical tape helps keep it tight. But keep that lectric tape off my paint, it's almost as bad as tar. It helps to rub the cork goo off the cork before applying cork to the TT.

and it helps out for all of us nimrods that do the knee-in-frame skids. Plus after ReLoad held onto my bike after my accident, I will use any excuse to buy something from those awesome dudes.....especially if they were to make beer koozies *HINT HINT*

well, some will say it protects the section of toptube with which your bars may come in accidental contact.
however, a piece of bartape wrapped in electrical won't do much to absorb a full blow really. If you ever adjust your stem height/length, you will need to redo it.
I have seen some decent ones: framepads, kashimax, guttermax (pipeclamp/ziptie and some clear thick tubing), etc.
The hardware store/RELoad/old bmx pads is/are your oyster!

i have the cloth tape and champ grips on the shoulders of my drops. i think im pretty safe.
i have been looking for a top tube protector for my mark v to cover up the ugly braze ons - i would love it if i could find one like i had on my old redline bmx from 1985 (but longer) you know the kind with the nylon with the velcro and the foam insert? i have been looking everywhere online and can't seem to find one? does anyone know where to get somthing like that?

that hutch one is sweet but i think i need a longer one - i used to have a hutch "bandito" all chrome - i loved that bike and cryed when it got jacked from outside a sev while i was playing galaga

yeah that is more of what i'm looking for - i think 19 inches would cover both those braze ons - i bet i could make one of those old skool ones pretty easy tho - if i could only find a friend with a sewing machine:rolleyes:
i admit the kashimax is stupid expensive, but there
is reason its better than just bartape and electric tape.
if i'm not mistaken, its sort a hard rubber with a steel
insert ...so that protects a hell of a lot better.
travsi -
the tt protector on your Samson Kierin on the velospace pic is excactally what I am looking for. where can i pick one up??

...if so, its just bartape (the vinyl type) and black tape (sort of like electrical tape)
edit: if you wrap two layers of bartape, you get a nice form which is higher
in the middle and blends into the top tube on the sides. i also used a box cutter
to "shave" the ends of the bartape and make them really thin so there's no bulky
spot which stands out.

yah. it's made to prevent denting due to serious impact, like a crash. so as not to ruin your frame in a crash.
i think bartape and electrical tape are only good to avoid frame-dingin' from bar-swingin'.

Why not just make/find a wrap-around piece of metal to slip between the layer of bar wrap/innertube? Seems like a nice solution and can still look good if you take your time.

Ahh impact from the bar when you crash, yeah I guess it would be better tan a homemade jobbie.

where can you get a kashimax for $30? Saw one on eBay not too long ago for around $30-$32, might have been used.
I admit my top tube looks like it's been bandaged in a cast in the picture - but it looks better in person. :o
There is a strip of cinelli cork underneath some sueded tape that I bought on eBay probably more suited for tennis rackets than bikes. If the bars hit the top tube, it'll be cork-on-suede-over-cork. On the downtube is another same-style homemade protector (for a brake I sometimes use). When I take the suede wrap off the top-tube it will look identical.
An interesting experiment would be to wrap a hammer in cork and try denting something with it. My guess is fat chance.
