Hi, I just had a crazy idea the other day. You can get ravens or carbon y frames pretty cheap. I'm thinking of making a hardtail, travel, 29er singlespeed out of one.
Initially, I thought I'd do it myself with carbon, but now I'm thinking maybe I should have someone weld up a steel rear.
The idea is this... trash the old swingarm, and replace it with a zero travel hardtail fit for a 29" wheel. If done right (with a qr mech?), I'm thinking it would be able to be stuffed into checked luggage a la s & s.
Anyone tried to do anything similar with a FS bike?
Let me know any wacky ideas you all might have for this project.

I'm a big 29er fan. It would definitely be the only one of these beasts on the block. I'd really love to do the swingarm in carbon, too, but I'm thinking it might get too expensive that way.

Sure you have. A 29" is a 700c with a MTB tire on it. The thought is that they just roll over everything. Very cool stuff. Several companies are producing them this year.

hey, your in sac too!! and a 26" dosent roll? haha

29 looks fun and cool, but finding tubes would not be.

You can actually use 26" tubes with a 29er. You just overinflate them to stretch them first, de-inflate, install, and re-inflate.

So... I bought an old trek carbon y frame... I'm gonna do it! I've got a buddy who was a welder at Seven, and am contemplating having him weld up the rear in titanium. I'd really like to try doing the rear myself in carbon fiber. I'm not sure when I'll get around to doing it, but I'm looking forward to when I do.
