I was hit by a car today and fortunately I came out relatively unscathed (so far) but my bike is TKO'd so I'm wondering if I can collect insurance without filing a police report? Has anyone ever been in this situation? Is it even important that I file a police report?

your insurance company will probably require you to file a police report

But you know what this means... NEW BIKE! Even though I cried for my poor yellow racer and it's short, short life.

Scary. Glad to hear you're okay.

Anyway the only real purpose of a police report /is/ for insurance companies. Police don't actually do anything.

Good luck.

In CA, you shouldn't need to file a police report. If you got his insurance info, you can contact them directly, or contact your insurance and they should take care of it. You might want to file a report anyway, just to cover your a$$.

I would cover myself by doing the report. It will probably make the process easier and also keep the other person from slightly altering the story in their favor.

After having been hit numerous times over the years, I have a new policy:
WHENEVER I get hit and there is serious damage to my bike or any damage to my person I ALWAYS file a police report. It saves you a lot of potential trouble in the long run.

Yeah, this is number two. ): He lead a short but great life. I totally cried in the middle of the bike shop when they told me that my bike suffered "total damage." Lets be fair here though, I took that bike out in goddam style.

And darling, EVERYTHING is about ******** Nam.

If I ever have to put a bike down, I want to make it just ridable, and then take it to the biggest ravine I can find (I picture up on Mulholland in LA, although I've only ever seen it in movies), and ride that **** over the edge, jumping off at the last minute. If I'm lucky, a) I can fake my own death for a little while, and b) it will blow up on impact.

Either that or I can chop it into a freakbike.
