In a crit last Sunday a rider went down and took 20 of us with him. Unavoidably, I crashed too and hit my ribs on someone’s bike.

I didn’t finish that race, but raced another just after and felt sore but okay.

Two days later I raced another 3 races and felt good, until that night. I woke up and man, did my chest hurt.

I did the smart thing and went to the doctor. He told me there’s not a lot you can do if it’s bruised or fractured. It’s going to hurt for awhile and takes a long time to heal. You should take 8 weeks off the bike.

I’ve been riding really strong and have some great races ahead in my schedule. I said, Doctor, there’s no way I’m taking 8 weeks off the bike.

He did a double take and said, then go get a chest x-ray so we know what we’re dealing with here. If it’s a bruise you’ll just be sore, but if its a fracture and you crash again you could puncture your lung.

So I’m waiting until noon today to get the results.

I’m generally conservative with my health, but I can’t stop racing now. My legs feel good. My plan is to cautiously continue.

I broke 3 ribs earlier this season doing Judo/Ju-Jitsu. Keep riding, just don't race.

Methinks you didn't break anything. I knew right away when I broke mine - the cracking noise they make is pretty sick. I had to have help getting out of bed in the morning and anything that involved my chest or abs made me scream. Then screaming would make me scream more. It's a vicious circle.
