Advocacy & Safety - Grants for Cycling Infrastructure?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi All...I live in a small but growing rural town. I commute to work and around town on my bike most days. To my surprise, there are no bike racks around town where I can safely park and lock my bike. The town has a good many cyclists and I see bikes locked to trees, signs and other objects along the sidewalks blocking access to those who are walking. My question is this...does anyone know where I can access some information on available grants for cycling infrastructure such as bike racks?

Thanks!
-Scott

Our community just got a grant to put in racks and bike lockers in various places around town. I believe it was a federal CMAQ grant (Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality improvement). I was told we could put bike racks in for about $150/each, so a little money can go a long way.

wow...$150 / rack is a great deal! Sounds like a plan...heck, for that price, I'd be willing to buy one or two and donate them to the town if they were willing to match. Thanks for the info!

Build it and they will come. If the cycling environment is conducive. It is for cycling to school near me . below are pictures I took today at the local middle school near me. No safety nannys here forcing the kids into mommy's car for "safety" purposes.

I went to the League of American Bicyclists site and that led me to www.bicylinginfo.org where I found tips on all sorts of funding. Try both places.

Another facility that would benefit cyclists would be to move the storm drain holes from the edge of the road to under the edge of the sidewalk. This would allow cyclists to ride at a constant distance from the side of the street. This would be best done when roads have to be repaved.
