Got my delux wheelset from Tony at IRO today. Ordered Monday at lunch and arrived Thursday (today) at lunch. Went with the black hubs/spokes and eggplant deep v's. Came out really nice. Now if UPS and FedEx hold up their part of the bargain and deliver all three packages tomorrow, I just might have a something to ride in 24 hours.
I should of seen if Tony had any veloplugs he could of sold me. I forgot until today and discovered that no one in the entire city of Dallas stocks 'em. No big deal though, went with Velux rim tape and it went on like butta.

Nice wheelset, the eggplant on black looks nice. What other componenets are on the way and what type of frame are you mounting these on?

Here's how it will hopefully end up tomorrow night:
Surly Steamroller (Battleship Grey)
Aheadset (black)
Sugino RD Crank (48 tooth) & BB
IRO Delux Wheelset & Cog (16 tooth/machined eggplants)
Crank Bros Candy Pedals (black) - stolen from my SS mtb
Whipperman Chain
Thomson Stem & Seatpost
Nitto Bullhorn Bars
Brooks B-17 Saddle (black w/silver rivets)
Continental Ultra Gatorskin Tires
Tektro 984 Extra Long Reach Calipers (black)
Kool-Stop Pads
Paul Cross Brake Lever
Cinelli Black Tape
The frame came from Carleton on this board. He's the guy who had the stripped out BB threads direct from Bianchi on his pista concept.

Yea, they were the right price for sure. I'm coming from a Specialized Allez Elite.. we'll see if I notice any difference..
Wow. Nice build list you got there...

**** those wheels look nice. I couldn't find a decent pic of the eggplant so I went with a different color. I have, how you say, the buyer's remorse. Also bright green rims.:D

You have the green rims? Had I gotten a black frame that would of been my first choice.
Yea, eggplant is a great color. It really looks like well, an eggplant. I've got them sitting next to my desk here and about 3/4 of them look black and you can see the slight hint of purple in some of the light. They should look really good spinning out in the sun.
You just sold me on my next set of rims. Thanks!

I wouldn't of even known about the color had I not seen Absenter's (at least that's his name on Flickr) pic with all the colors...

Yea, they're goin on a black frame, but man those eggplants are really freakin sweet. Oh and the RD crank, you'll never know the difference until you upgrade, I ran one for like a year and they're just fine. 'Til you get a 75, then there ain't no goin back. Sounds like a badass bike yer building tho.

Nice build list. You gonna chop the extra long ends off the rear axle..?:)

They are pretty long, I'm guessing so they'll fit some wider rear widths. We'll see how it looks once the frame arrives. Or I could just throw some pegs on there like my old BMX :)

Yo! Post or send me pics of the build.
Good luck unpacking that frame. I overdid it on the wrap/tape job. It should take you a good 20 minutes.
:D
...I just wanted to make sure you got the frame in the excellent condition that I promised.

Well, I'm almost done with my über bike build parts list. I'm calling Tony next week, as soon as work chills out a bit. If you want, I'll mention you, hopefully 'Shoefly' will ring a bell.

You probably won't believe it, but shipping companies offer international service now too! They apparently load the horse and buggy on a boat! I know it's hard to keep up with technology, I bet they'll have people flying by the next century!!!
[/sarcasm] :D
Seriously though, just contact Marcus at Yojimbos or Tony at IRO. I know they'd be willing to ship a set to the UK.

I'm thinking shipping will cost at least as much as the rims do...

Nah, not even close. The rims are what, $60 / piece?
5 lbs. from the US to the UK via USPS would cost $33.75. If it was just the rims, that's not too bad, IMHO. It might be a little more than that with handling and it would def. cost more if you purchased a wheelset, but I wouldn't call it prohibitive.
Maybe you could even convince them to mark it as a gift with a low declared value to save on the customs....

(Having the world's most overrated ugly and heavy rims shipped to the UK from abroad would be... silly. Very silly. Just buy CXP-33's or other nice rims and be done with it. No need to be like the 61293710664 other fixed riders who have deepvees.)

Highly, I've shipped a few over before. They're in pretty high demand here so do what I did and get a few people to place an order with you. Just watch out for customs tax. I reccommend Trackstar or Kingkog for your deep-v needs. T* did me solid with their ship job/price. Not much more than paying for CXP33s in these parts.

I have no doubt CXP-33's are nice rims, but I'm rather taken by the aero look. What would you reccomend aero wise that I can get in the UK or does aero qualify as ugly, full stop?

Gotta love UPS. They delivered one of the packages today by leaving it at the door. Didn't knock or even ring. The second package containing the frame showed "out for delivery" all day and never showed up. Even when I called they promised that it would be delivered today. That's only to call an hour later and be told it never left the main hub even though the website showed it did as well as their previous support person told me.
F-UPS.
Now I gotta wait till Tuesday due to the long weekend. They won't even let me pick it up at the main hub as they are closed until then. So glad I paid extra to get all the other parts here on time...

I'm no expert on rims at all... Maybe someone else will suggest another rim, or google "aero rim", search rim-makers' sites etc.
To me, almost all aero rims are pretty ugly, but deepvee especially. I'm not fond of the flat aero sections at all. Plus it is not deep enough to actually make a difference in aerodynamics, but you do get the weight penalty and the crosswind troubles. So you get zero benefit and all of the drawbacks (to a bearable extent, obviously. Neither the weight nor the sail effect are all that bad.)
The big selling point of it is that you can get it non-machined in candy colors. Real hipster stuff.
Riding aero rims in an urban environment is just not very clever. You make no use of the benefit they offer, because that only comes at higher speeds. The weight is a big minus if you have to stop and accelerate often, which you do in a city. Plus the high profile makes their ride harsher, again not much fun in pothole-land.
Sorry to bring this up in a thread about a new deepvee wheelset. I know they are perfectly fine rims for a good price, and I know I'm a jerk;)
The bottom line is, if you like the looks and don't mind the minor impracticality, nor the fact that everyone and their mother rides one, allá tú. I won't. Never ever.

dont deep vees offer more strength per spoke than non deep vee rims... helping them stay truer longer... or was that just jibberish?

Not all aero rims have a deep profile. and not all of them are flat, either. i have some nice low to medium profile arayas with a beautifully rounded shape. They're great. Never been a huge fan of the deep vs either, tho.
deep v's are tougher, or so they say

Preatty much, yes, I believe. Obviously, they are pretty solid rims, just like dozens of other rims. The deep profile makes them stiffer and stronger in a vertical direction than standard rims, which is of no use whatsoever, in any riding style or conditions. Arguably, it makes them less comfy to ride on, though. A rim has to be stiff and strong laterally, not vertically. [/HATE]

Mavic and Halo both do a deep-section rim. I'm building a wheelset on the Ambrosio ones at the moment.

Got a rear brake caliper by accident. Other than that, the build went great. Need to get a shorter stem and a straight seatpost though. Still working on how I like the bars too.. Rides like butta and is fairly light. Now lets hope the weatherman is wrong and it doesn't rain the rest of the week.
