Touring - Building Up Novara Safari Frame

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I picked up this Novara Safari frame for next to nothing and would like to build it up into a simple XC MTB. I'm not going to race it or do any big stuff on it. I mainly want to build it up for fun and have an extra all terrain bike (w/ front suspension) for when I have company. I know its a touring frame, but the geometry is very close to my Kona MTB.
I'm posting this in the touring section as I am really looking for information on this frame. Does anyone heer happen to know what year this Safari frameset is from? Anyone know what componentry came with it (8/9 speed, etc)? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't put front suspenion on it unless you already have a fork hanging around--- the MTB parts you will need would cost more than going to REI and buying a new hardtail.
I'd just start collecting used parts until you got enough to build and use the stock fork.

I have found REI Customer Support really great over a number of years (I am a satisfied owner of a Safari), and based upon that I would be inclined to phone them with the Serial Number - which is, of course, probably stamped under the pedal crank housing. Just an idea.
