Spare yourself the time, and hassle since you have no clue, and take it to a bike shop.

Then watch how they do it, and next time you can do it yourself, but if you try, you will fail.

Have you ever wanted to disable a man, scalp him, and then feed his brains to your dog?

Neither have I, but it'd make for an interesting horror movie character. Sort of a combination of Magua from "Last of the Mohicans" and Jupiter from "The Hills Have Eyes" (Craven's, not that crappy remake).

what kind of cranks do you have?

remove all nuts/bolts and tap with a rubber mallet. maybe spray some lube into the crank area and keep tapping w/ mallet. keep all the nuts/bolts in order so you can put them back on the same way they came off.
