I just received a new saddle from Prefromance Bike. It is a kickin' retro gold Schwinn Stingray saddle. No, it is not a banana seat. The problem is, is that I bought it mainly because it looked cool and reminded me of the Gold Schwinn Stingray I had as a child (also it was on sale). The saddle is very hard and unforgiving. I know very little about saddles, so this is where I need the help. What is the difference between a MTB and road saddle? What are the different variations of each style?

I started a similar post on the roadbike section. My limited experince tells me that no amount of reviews or opinions will help. If you have a cool LBS owner, maybe he/she will let you try out a few of the different styles they have piling up in the back because several people are in your shoes (or saddle). I have seen reviews for a given seat when it was installed on both MTB's and road bikes so I don't think there is much of a distinction. In my case, I went with a racing type seat that I never would have selected just by pressing it with my hands alone.
