Hello. I have a question about lubricating an old 3 speed internal shifting hub. I read the thinger on Sheldon Browns page about 3 speed maintenance, and it said that most have a cap in which to pour oil. However, the one I have does not seem to have any such opening along the curved wall of the hub.

I was wondering how one would go about lubricating or finding out how to lubricate/grease this particular hub.

What kind of hub? I know that one can lubricate sturmeys through the hollow axle when the oil port is rusted shut.

If it has a shimano type plunger indicator (what the shift cable connects to on the right side of the hub) you can unscrew that and oil the hub through the hollow axel shaft.

If you have a drum brake 3 -speed hub, be sure to grease the bearing on the left side ( unscrew locknut, remove cone adjustment washer, take off brake assembly, unscrew axle cone and put plenty of grease between the balls that are usually in a retainer) If this bearing runs dry and for some reason the bike falls or leans to the left, the oil that lubricates the hub can reach the drum brake pads and ruin them ( they soak up oil) The excess grease you put in the bearing not only lubricates that bearing but will also act as a seal against the oil.
