I've used shifter cables on brakes for years. It started as a necessity as I didn't have any brake cables during a repair, and found I really liked the feal of the thinner sti cables especially to the rear. They seem to slip through the housing better.

The question is WHY NOT I've never had any issues with the different end of the sti cable slipping thru the holder in the brake lever.

Additionally, I'm in the process of designing a ti 'crossbike from Dean and am thinking of reauesting the rear brake cable stops to be sti style complete wiht threads for in-line adjustment.

WHY NOT will somebody please explain why this is not a good idea?

todd richards, by butt feels much better now......

I know that the STI cable housing cannot take braking forces; it can split apart, due to the way the wires run more or less along the housing, and render the brakes useless.

seconded. my friends tried doing it on their bmx bikes so the brake didn't lock up when the cable got tangled up. it would work for a while but the housing would eventually explode from the braking forces.

The gear cable inners are not as strong as brake cables. Gears transmit mostly positional information, brakes transmit force.
