Any opinions on the Bianchi Volpe vs. the Raleigh Cadent?

I'm looking to upgrade from my current Trek Hybrid that I've been commuting on for 2 years now to something that's a bit more aerodynamic. My bike riding needs are:
Commuting 75%
Leisurely family bike rides 20%
Occasional longer "touring" rides 5%

I may also be getting into some semi-competitive racing (duathalon/triathalon) in the next year or so, and want a bike I at least won't embarrass myself on.

I'd like to buy locally to support a LBS, and in looking around the two best options I've found are:

LBS#1: '05 Bianchi Volpe for ~$700
LBS#2: '06 Raleigh Cadent 2.0 for ~$850

Anyone have any personal experience with either of these bikes?

Well, for straight up commuting, I would say the Volpe. Its got more clearance for fenders and larger tires and has fender/rack mounts. I don't know about the racing needs though.

I don't have personal experience with either yet. Still waiting for the Volpe I've ordered to arrive at the LBS.

I know nothing about the Raleigh, but the Volpe is a pretty sweet bike (it's a Bianchi, what more do you need?). It's pretty light and quick for what it is and it's great for commuting. If I were into racing, I would certainly consider using it until I could afford an actual racing bike.

If you do get the Volpe, plan on getting rid of the ugly and uncomfortable stock saddle and suspension seatpost and watch the chain. My chain broke on the third day I had it and someone else on the Car-Free forum had the same problem, but his destroyed his rear wheel and scratched up the chainstays as well. Otherwise, I couldn't be happier with it.

I vote for the Volpe. I rode one for years. Double centuries to fast club rides to commuting it did it all. Looking at the components on both bikes I recognise most of the stuff on the Volpe but not the Raleigh. At $700 vs $850 I would take the Volpe.

Thanks for all the advice! I've been leaning towards the Volpe, so that's the route I'll likely go.
