Hey talk to toshiw he found a place that has em for 170! he posted in the topic square taper vs. splined. Anyways...
Compact drive and Standard drive. Well compact has a smaller bolt diameter for the rings. and standard has a larger one...110mm, anyways if you are not going to be running huge rings then compact will work just fine...actually I perfer it. If you want to run big rings like dhr's do then go standard. Another reason for this is that the larger bolt diameter will allow your rings to be a bit stronger than if you ran a big ring with a compact system. Make sense? There's a little more to it than that...but that kinda sums it all up for ya. :crash:

Smaller gear ratios, and supposidly stiffer.
If you're running a short cage derailleur, it's better to have a compact crank. As the amount of slack removed by the derailleur action is limited.
If you're running a long cage, you'd be better off with a standard crank.

actually you can run a long cage derailure with either.... the short cages are more for DH and if you are only runnin two rings in the front. Look at good road bikes...they use a short cage. As you stated they both take up different amounts of slack in the chain, in DH and with two rings there is less slack to be taken up...but with a triple ring crank you still need that long cage to take up all the slack no mater if it's a standard or compact drive.

Makes sense. You learn something everyday.
I thought the long cages came out when mt bikes went to triple rings and need the additional length to take up the slack. Then, a lot of riders were going to smaller cassette ratios, and smaller granny gears, thus the compact cranks were needed.
But the two ring or DH makes total sense!
