Attempting to get from Mobile to New Orleans in February, I have the adventure cycling map for the area, but they do not get far enough south to hit New Orleans, the closest they get is Bogalusa, LA which is a days ride away. Was hoping someone might know of a route down to New Orleans. Thanks for the help. Zach

That could be a problem. I think the only routes in are Interstate 10 across Lake Ponchitrain (bad idea), Interstate 55 (an even worse idea) and the Ponchetrain Causeway (no bikes alowed). There is a highway going into New Orleans from the north (US67?) that turns into Canal Street once you get into town.

Something you need to know about bicycles in New Orleans. The whole city is pretty easy to get around in with a bicycle. But you need to know about the bridges- there are three of them that cross the Mississippi River in New Orleans. None of them have bicycle access and you would be crazy to try it. However, most of the ferries DO allow bicycles. Canal Street ferry, Jackson Ave ferry, Chalmette ferry.

Thanks for the info!! My plan is to fly into Mobile, ride in to Louisiana on that section of the Southern Tier route, then get down to New Oreleans to fly out...the question remains, how to get down there with out getting run over by a truck?!!

I rode from Atlanta, GA to New Orleans a while back, was not allowed on the Interstate, ask for direction help, in Mobile was told could go the old route being State Hwy 90 did ride that route but nothering was open on the way, was lucky had plenty of water & food to eat as had been camping on the ride, it is 143 miles, a very nice ride like flat & fast, I cant remember but it seem to take about 12 hours with a few stops to snack, short rest etc eat at the first seafood resturant came to the waiter said did believe had seen a little fellow eat & drink so much tea & seafood
I am 70 inches tall weight 135 lbs.

Thanks for the info, that looks to be the best option. Was there much traffic on 90? Thanks again, Zach

Traffic was heavy in Mobile, but not dangerous, after Gulfport
the traffic is very light as one goes onto the island can ride a
long way not meet a car nor does one pass, you are near by yourself for many miles. I remember going through a tunnel but cannot remember if it was before or after Mobile, but anyway tried to flag a pickup truck no one would stop, so finally rode as fast as possible, made it through the tunnel, no problem at all.
One thing I was loaded on my bike, rear rack, panters, handlebar
bag, which I guess slowed me down in the 143 mile ride.
