Training & Nutrition - Where can I buy Maltodextrin?

Hi,

I am trying to save money and make my own gel. I have read that mixing maltodextrin with water is essentially the same as most of the gels (Powerbar, etc) on the market.

Does anyone know the best place to buy wholesale maltodextrin?

Anyplace that sells brewing supplies. You can pick up a
beer making kit at the same time.

I saw this question a month ago and went to a local Health Food store. They stocked a weight gain supplement that was essentially Maltodextrin(MD) for $8.00/lb. The clerk was a good person and told me basic cold soluble MD could be had on the Internet for ~$3.00/lb. I checked and found this to be true. I get my MD at a local brew store and make up batches with hot water then chill it.

mmmmmmmmmmmm... beer....

I get mine, for my energy drink powder, from my local wine making establishment. I can pick up a cup's worth for about $2.

Cool.

Couple of things I've learned about this. First of all you may want to avoid the beer/wine stores because the maltodextrin they sell is not usually amalgamated (sp?). That means it doesn't mix well. That said, I've yet to find (I'll call Heidi) any amalgamated maltodextrin in anything less than 50 pound bags. (I know how hypocritical that sounds)

I've been using the maltodextrin from Now Foods called Carbo Gain. It doesn't mix real well and has a chalky taste. (I put it in my "Magic Bullet" to blend it with water) To help improve the taste I will mix it with "Ultra Fuel" from Twinlabs, which is mostly maltodextrin as well. This does seem to work well in my effort to make my own carbo gel for long rides, but I'm very interested in any other suggestions.

Worst case you can buy it off of Ebay. Looks like 7 pounds goes for 20 bucks.

Too bad I didn't see this before I moved. I had half a 50# bag of the good stuff to give away. Gave it back to the guy that put together the group order...
