Fifty Plus (50+) - observations on speed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
For whatever reason, the last 2 times skipper and I have done the Irma's pie ride, I've checked our average speed. It is of some interest to note that travelling to Nirvana we have averaged approx. 15.5 mph. This is for a distance of 20 miles and includes the worst hills on the ride. On the way home a distance of 20 to 25 miles depending on which loop we take, we only average approx. 14mph. Now this may be of little interest and of no concern to most, however it does open the door to speculation on motivation. As before, I'm sure there is a gov't grant in this.

Could be all of the blood goes to your stomach instead of your legs, or perhaps the extra 3 lbs. Just a guess.

My corollary observation is: I can ride at 85% to 90% all day with a tailwind, but can only maintain around 75% for long periods going into the wind. Is it psychological?
