Yes. This is not the " good intro for an emo band on myspace" thread.

It's the Heavy music thread.

I've been on a goth metal kick. Nightwish and Tristania are good. I think my new nickname at work is Mistress Lauren.

Dope is fun for easy listening.

I don't listen to much heavy stuff, but I love Opeth and have all of their albums/DVD. I also like Mastodon's Leviathon, Metallica's first three, and early Morbid Angel. (Immortal! \M/  \M/)

Older heavy stuff like Zeppelin/Hendrix/etc. gets a nod, of course...it's what I grew up on. Not sure that's what the OP meant, however...

Nightwish is pretty good. They aren't metal enough for this thread IMO, but I am on a huge Lacuna Coil kick.

Why do you guys like heavy metal? Do you live in Detroit or San Antonio??? Please, clue me in. Is it a cyclist thing or just a percentage thing? I saw Black Sabbath on their first US tour and was totally unimpressed....I bought a Rick Rubin produced Slayer album, same...

For me, metal is just potentially powerful music. I don't prefer it over other music...in fact, I have more jazz, latin, techno, and MUCH more classical than metal. Nothing substitutes for a heavy Opeth song when I want to hear music that sounds like the earth splitting open, though. :D

Pantera
Metallica
Antrax

Metal is like a technical downhill. At its rare best it is combination of power,
passion, and precision.

The classical equivalent is Le Sacre du Printemps...this is the music that will pin
you to the wall, b***h slap you, and take your phone number for its little black
book.

Some of the heaviness I've been rocking to lately:
Symphony X
Sonata Arctica
Tool
Dream Theater
Black Label Society
Nightwish
Megadeth
Pantera
Type O Negative

I can't get into a lot of these newer 'metalcore' or whatever bands...it's fine until the vocals start. OK, enough will probably take issue with the Euro power/prog metal singers that I dig so much...oh well.

That album had so much wasted potential, between the horrible production, lack of lead guitar and often crummy lyrics. A lot of the music was pretty good, but they killed it with all the other stuff. Hopefully Rick Rubin will straighten the Metallica ship.

Get that Dream Theater crap out of here...Listen to some Rhapsody, or Dragonforce, or classic Malmsteen.

I met Jason Bonham at the grocery yesterday. He's in town with Foreigner, and I was in front of him buying juice -what are the odds? What a nice guy! Made my week, it did...:D

Did no one mention Queensrÿche?

Rage For Order
The Warning
Operation: Mindcrime

Also Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell with Ronnie James Dio. One of the last concerts I attended was Dio's tour for Last In Line. Awesome pryrotechnics, lighting, laser show, with a huge blacklighted multi-Egyptian-themed mural onstage behind the band. Of course they played all of the hits from Heaven and Hell, with Vivian Campbell doing the Tony Iommi thang to absolute perfection.

I did too     :)

And Bullet? Come on. Neither Matt can play for ****, or sing, as his bass is recorded so quietly it seems Jay's principle reason for being is to get underage girls drunk... Yes, I know the band. I tried, really I did, to like them. But no.

"'Tallica gives you heavy, baby," *picks up his Explorer, jacks in and plays Sad But True*

hmm... I dabble in extreme metal

Opeth
Agalloch
Primordial
Ulver
Arcturus
Orphaned Land
Vintersorg

Most of my collection is 70's prog. Gentle Giant and Van Der Graaf Generator being favs.

Avenged Sevenfold

The new Lamb of God is awesome -- reminiscent of Pantera. For those that like metalcore check out Maroon and Burn in Silence. Both are really good (think Killswitch or Unearth, maybe a little In Flames) and haven't gotten much attention. Oh, and the new Mastodon is so good. That band is ****ing amazing.
