I did a quick search and didn't find that this had been posted.

The potential for catastrophic failure makes this frightening. Check your skewers if: a) They're Shimano; b) They're silver; c) Made after Nov. 1, 2005.
The link walks you through the identification process. Applies to Road, MTB and Sport QRs.

It is all of the above... and I've had this frightening potential catastrophic failure for the past six months without me even knowing... so what do I do now? Do all the LBS have explicit instructions to replace them? What if they don't?

Here in Austin, and down in Houston, the shops just got the official notice yesterday (Monday). They were bewildered when my brother-in-law and I called them up to find out what to do. Shimano hasn't yet organized replacement plans or shipped any parts.
The shop told me to dig up an old skewer and use that. So I'll use one of my many old ones and wait for Shimano to get their poop in a group.
