Triathlon - Just did my 1st Olympic Tri

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey all,
I've been lurking and reading here for a while, and just made it through my first Olympic distance yesterday.
I beat my goal of 3 hours with a 2:58:27. I snuck in under my target of 30min for the swim with a 29:53. I got way too excited and crushed my target on the bike of 1:25 with a 1:16:41, and paid for it with a painfully slow run of 1:05:27, missing my target of keeping it under an hour.
Now if only I could learn how to run.... It's funny how something my 2 year old has figured out on her own can be so elusive to me. :) We'll see if this running group I'm joining next week helps me beat my buddy at my next Tri in September.

Under 3 hours, great job! I'm doing my first Oly in about a month and your targets look very familar to me. Actually your swim and bike ones are the same. My experience is running mainly so I am hoping to keep my run time between 45 and 50 minutes, but who knows. Keep running and you will get faster. Just doing this multisport training has made me run the fastest I have in five years.

Congrats!
I'm doing my first olympic in 10 days. I'm with you on the bike and run targets. But my swim, *sigh*, I'm hoping for 42 minutes.
Excuse my ignorance, but what's the Oly distance? I'm new to triathlons. Congrats on beating your goal.

olympic or international distance, 1.5k swim 40k bike 10k run
Thanks jrennie. Is there a reason why they don't do an Ironman distance in the Olympics? Does the IOC allow professional triathletes to compete in the Olympics (as they do for road cyclists and other sports)?

Well most Olympic Triathletes are profensionals.....Asking why they do an Olympic(International) distance Triathlon in the Olympics, vice a Ironaman distance. It is like asking why they do (for example) 100mi in the road race of the olympics, even though they race 200mi in another race..... It is just what was picked.
Also, the Olympics is ITU, so it is draft legal. You have to have a bike with drops(road bike), if you have aeor bars they cannot extend past the brakes. In an Ironman, it is NON-draft legal. So you have a TT/tri specific frame, with usualy one peice base/aero bars.
*Forgive anything that is wrong, I am kinda drunkk.....
Thanks for the clarification.
