Bicycle Mechanics - Chain comes off
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Sometimes when I am on the small chain ring and large sprocket, the chain comes off if I accidently back pedal. Very annoying and I get covered in oil putting it back on.
I have shimano 105 9 speed. Is this an adjustment issue, chain length issue or just a fact of life with derrailler?
It's an adjustment probably on the front deraileur, assuming that the chain is coming off on the front. You want to turn in the screw marked "L"or "LOW" on the front deraileur, start with maybe 1/4 of a turn. You want it to not rub in that gear combination but not have any more clearance than that.
There are also guards (http://www.bikeparts.com/search_results.asp?739%2E1735_649%2E7701_16%2E30807) you can buy to help, but how well they work is a much discussed matter of opinion.

Yep, what he said. Just play with the front derailleur low gear limit screw. All it takes is a philips screwdriver. You can find resources on the internet, I think Sheldon has a nice site about how to do it. Simple stuff, anyway.
