I have a crack in my rim sidewall that is about 1.5 cm long. I race downhill, and I am not sure what this means to me. Can I continue to use the rim or do I need to replace it?

I would strongly advise you to replace your rim. But, I have a suggestion. Where I live mechanics build wheels with old steel mtb rims, suppose 26 X 1.75. These rims are not used in competition but are use for training as a very inexpensive rim that you can discard it if it is badly damage.

Your rim has become scrap. Buy a new one and replace it. Don't ride it again.

It could mean a trip to the Emergency Room or worse if it the crack propogates during a run. Get it replaced.

Get a life insurance policy and make me the beneficary, then go for it! Seriously, any cracking on aluminum means that failure in (of the catastrophic kind) is just around the corner.

rim replacement is really not that big a deal if your spokes are still in good condition. get a new rim, same profile so the spoke length is the same. align the spokes holes of the new rim with the existing rim and tape it together. loosen the spokes evenly and diagonally on the existing rim. then remove each spoke from the existing rim and attach to the new rim. be sure to attach the spokes with the same number of turns. tension the spokes up and true it up as best you can. then take it to the LBS for truing if required.
