Need help witha kid trailer!

Help me out folks. I want to get a double trailer to haul my kids around (1 and 4) but I'm having trouble finding the right trailer/hitch combo. My bike is a hardtail mountain bike with disc brakes.....other than a Burley and their alternative hitch....whats my best bet?

He's not quite 4 yet, and only 30 pounds so he's got a ways to go. I don't think he's quite ready for a tagalong yet either.

Didn't mean to sound so dire. Was just thinking of my own 3.5 yr. old whose length and girth are starting to encroach on his 1.5 yr. old brother's space. But your youngest is still able to give up some room which helps.

Alternatively, you can buy just the Wike hitch and attach a Burley trailer which works (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=171450) just as well.

I have the $95 Instep basic trailer and no issues mounting to my HT or FS bike. Mount is a metal adapter that goes on the skewer. Been pleased so far....

Do you run disc brakes on either of your bikes you use to pull the trailer?

The Wike trailer has a good hitch.
Another very good option is the Chariot (http://chariotcarriers.com). The mid-scale models without suspension or even the ones without the stroller/jogging kits are very decent – pricewise too – and have more cargo room than the high-end ones.

The hitch attaches to the quick release and doesn't interfere with either your feet or disc brake.

Good question! I don't have a disc brake (but I've seen them). Wouldn't it fit around the chainstay?

My tandem has an Arai drag brake which is too close to the stays to allow the safety strap in the normal spot. Two solutions would work out in that case:

1. Use a couple of chain links (available at a hardware store) to lenghten the safety strap. Or if you only use the trailer with one bike, sew a nylon strap onto it to make it longer.

2. Wrap it around the rear rack. This is what I did.

Ah OK, lengthen it! That sounds like a darn good idea.

The InStep trailer I just got attaches to a bracket that mounts to the rear quick release. Worked great even on my disc braked hardtail.

I also have the instep. It mounts to baout anything you can imagine. I have used three very different bikes. No problem.

I Use a Chariot. love the ball and socked mount, right on the skewer. The features of the trailer are also amazing.
