I'll take the liberty of cutting and pasting one of ABH's old posts. Hope that's okay with everyone, since the sentiments will eventually end up here in one form or another anyway, and it will save alan some time and the rest of us won't have to sit on the edges of our seats. Here goes:
The monthly "clearance sale" has started at BikesDirect.
The pattern is always the same:
- someone joins the Forum to announce they are looking for a new bike and the "best buy" they have found is from BikesDirect, on sale now for $349.99. During the course of his thread, he will mention his two or three "best choices"' and all three will be brands sold only by BikesDirect and its E-Bay stores.
- the loyal followers of BikesDirect chimes in to say "I bought a bike from BikesDirect and it is wonderful".
- next, the new member announces he is placing the order with BikesDirect
- he is congratulated by the loyal followers
- the following week, Mr. New Member posts to say that the bike arrived and is worth double what he paid
Then, that "new member" disappears from the Forums. His work is done. Next month, about this time, another "new member" starts the whole game over again.
More evidence of how well BikesDirect using the internet for "free" or low-cost advertising is E-Bay. Over twenty new Motobecane road bikes are being offered on E-Bay on a given day. All of them are being sold by BikesDirect under the five or six different names it uses at any particular time. No other bike retailer in America has so many active auctions on E-Bay.
The number of post-1990 (non-French) Motobecane road bikes offered on E-Bay by an actual owner averages around one or two bikes per day. Yet there will be road bike auctions for about 120 Cannondales, 150 Treks, 80 Specialized, and 60 Giants. After all the endless promotion by BikeDirect in "Bike Forums", the number of BD imported Motobecanes out on the road appears to be more like "dozens and dozens", rather than "thousands and thousands".
The number of "n00bie" riders providing helpful plugs for the current sale at BikesDirect always outnumbers the number of newbies inquiring about Cannondale, Trek, Specialized and Giant. A company with less than 1% of the road bike market generates more "buy this bike" threads than all of the other brands combined. There is a Motobecane thread active on page one of "Road Cycling" six days a week. But, of course, this could not have anything to do with shills....just ask the shills....
Cheers.

I agree with all this, except for the "dozens and dozens" part. I personally know 6 people who have purchased a new road bike in the last 5 months. Four of them were BD Fujibecanes. One was a 2006 D/A $pecialized Roubaix. One got a gently used Klein Quantum w/full Ultegra (w/Mavic Cosmics) for (cough cough) $600. All were bought by cycling newbies who specifically asked my advice.
I had told them all to wait a few weeks for the right bike to show up on Craigslist. The Klein guy did just that, but everyone else went new. Klein guy clearly got the best deal. He's got 95% as sweet of a bike as Mr. $4500 Roubaix, and still spent less than all the Fujibecane guys.
At any rate, there will be a LOT of Fujibecanes out there, but they probably won't be on the roads since most new bike riders don't actually ride that much. I have, however, been seeing various levels of Fujibecane show up used on Craigslist in the last few months -- and lots of them.
I think BD is moving a lot of bikes...

Can the moderators archive, and script the server to auto insert this into every thread with Motobecane in the title? It would save a lot of keystrokes.

So are you someone from a different company? Waldo has been here longer than you. Maybe he's truly interested in the bike and you are here to shut down his compliments of BD.
Just playing devil's advocate. :D
How's our favorite Houston bike dealer going to find this thread without the name Motobecane in the title?

My purpose here is just to take care of alanbikehouston's obligatory rant on any thread wherein bikesdirect.com is mentioned.
And to be a smartass.

Very savvy move, no?
:D :D :D
DARN! I was hoping for the time trial bike. Hmmm... perhaps I could convert...

I haven't looked at a bikes direct or motobecane thread in like 8 months... Simply because I assumed they were plants. Today I saw two successive references to alanbikehouston's 'obligatory bikedirect rant', but hadn't actually read what it was. Thanks for reposting, because it was truly enlightening. Here's my reasoning about why I just assume that all 'noobie' threads talking about what deals they've found are BS:
-Last year, I was lurking this forum for some time, and finally signed up in June 2005. I didn't post until I decided for myself what kind of bike to get, and where to get it. It NEVER occured to me to post something like, "I found this great deal at this place here", because I just assumed THAT NOBODY GAVE A FLYING FART! The reason nobody would care what I had to say about deals I've found? Because I had no freaking idea what a good deal was. Why would anybody with half a brain even read a thread that says, "I'm new to cycling. I found this deal." My internal translation of that would be something like, "I don't know what I'm talking about... Check this out."
So, in my mind, there's two options: 1-nobody goes through the trouble to post about what a great deal they got, especially when they're a new cyclist. 2-in the event that some noobie genuinely gets excited enough about a great deal they've found: you'd have to be insane to follow their lead.
This revelation doesn't really change much... or shouldn't. People should really know to look out for these types of things... if they don't, then heaven help them if they're unhappy with what they get.

Obviously you are looking at the wrong group of cyclists. There are at leat two regular posters here that race their Motos. I, while recovering from GastricBypass surgury have nearly 400 miles on my Moto, and my daughter has the same mileage. I'm sure if you really cared to look you will see the same proportion of Treks, Cannondales, Specialized all on Craigslist, but you won't so you don't.
I will agree that the Klein guy got the best deal.
So are you someone from a different company? Waldo has been here longer than you. Maybe he's truly interested in the bike and you are here to shut down his compliments of BD.

Thanks for the good words, but mostly I posted to be the same smart ass as Second Mouse and to see if it might stir the same discussion of 'Whose frame is it anyway?' I have in all of my own bike threads tried to be very even. Mentioning both good and bad, of the bike, and the service. What I wanted to change, and what I had to change. So I do not expect to be called a shill although I usually find it amusing.
DARN! I was hoping for the time trial bike. Hmmm... perhaps I could convert...
Me too!:D :D :D
I'm sure Ostuni really wanted this to be a TT bike also.
How's our favorite Houston bike dealer going to find this thread without the name Motobecane in the title?
Maybe there was a method to my madness, no mention of BD or Moto.
No not really!

I'm not saying Fujibecane riders are any different from SpecialTrekDale riders with respect to leaving their bikes in the garage.
Why was this thread moved, I am not advertising any service or selling any bike. It was an informational post only!
