Commuting - First Blood on Commute

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Almost at work today and my tires lose the road making a sweeping right hand turn. Crashed the bike, broke both pedals, one worse than the other, and banged up my knee.
After a trip to the doctor, Xrays were fine, no tears, just lots of swelling and pain when I move laterally. Prob off the bike commute for a week or so.
Damn, this sucks.

Glad you're ok, but I know how it feels. I crashed the bike a couple weeks ago doing sort of the same thing: leaning the bike into a right-hand turn at a decent speed, relatively speaking, and hit a pile of rubble from the last rainfall. Front wheel slid out on the gravel, but then quickly righted when it cleared the gravel throwing me the opposite direction I thought I would fall. Before I knew it, I ran into the right hand curb and flipped over hitting my helmeted head on the sidewalk. I escaped with only minor abrasions to my right knee and right shoulder.

That sucks. Be glad, though, that you and the bike only received minor injuries!

I got my first blood about a month and a half ago.
The lessons learned are quite worth the scars...although that's not really much consolation.

Broke both pedals? Sounds like a hard crash. Glad to hear you weren't injured more severely. Hopeyou heal quicker than expected, I hate to hear of anyone stuck off the bike.

Glad you are alright. I am interested in how you broke both pedals? Was the bike flipping?

The pedal on the side I fell broke worse- the 'axel' of the pedal pushed through the platform (which is crazy since it's metal), and on the other one, the plastic part of the toe strap that attaches to the front of the platform got sheared off.
I'm considering myself pretty lucky, all in all, and am gonna be much more careful from here on out.
