Commuting - Twice now the idiot cagers almost killed me on my commute in.

I ride past a high school during my morning commute and every morning a line of cars is parked in the bike lane forcing me to ride out in the right hand lane on a 3 lane 45mph road. Maybe a couple times a year I will see cops out there writing tickets but it does absolutely nothing to deter these morons from doing it.

Anyway, last week I was coming up to a light in the right lane and was passing stopped traffic in the middle lane when some kid opens the passenger side door and almost hit me with it. I would have gone down hard if he opened the door a little wider.

Today, after I passed the school some jerkoff in a PT cruiser passed me (I'm in the bike lane) and then proceeded to stop right in front of me completely blocking the bike lane.

God I hate cagers sometimes...:mad:

Schools are a horrible place to ride by. I have a few on my drive and have had a few issues.
For example: woman + children + SUV= right hook the cyclist (almost). I pay even more attention when passing said schools.

1. Why are you riding in the door zone?
2. If you know cars park in the bike lane next to the school, why do you ride in the bike lane?

Glad you're okay, though. When I ride, I encounter the unexpected door swinging open, but I'm outside of its reach which means I'm in the street. If you have a 3 lane road, you should be able to comfortably ride outside the door zone, unless it's bumper to bumper in all 3 lanes.

I keep wondering what will happen, if someone ever opens their door in front of me. I ride a trike, and so I'd run into their door cranks-first. It would surely do some damage, and if the person's leg were to get caught between the chainrings and the door.... well, let's hope I never have to find out the hard way.

Doors scare the hell out of me. And cars that jump through their backside to get around you only to make a turn in front of you. Around here (Charlotte) bike lanes seem to be looked on with a degree of contempt , a waste of taxpayers money.

I have no choice. And they aren't parked in front of the school. They are stopped on a main road that the school is set back off of. There is a side street and the entrance to the school is off the side street.

I do ride outside the door zone. This was a kid getting out of his Dad's SUV from the passengers side with the vehicle stopped in the middle lane!!! :eek:

There really aren't any alternate routes for me to take either. I've been more careful after the door incident but I wasn't expecting that car to pull over and stop right in front of me this morning though. That was completely out of the blue.

Call the police and have them go monitor the school. Tell them "it's for the children" or that "children are in danger" (which they are by getting out in the middle of the street) and they probably would do it.
