View Full Version : Damn!
I just stripped out the threads on my Race Face crank trying to extract it from my old frame. I guess the threads got cross threaded, and then when I went to extract the crank, it tore all the threads out from inside the crank. I'm not exactly sure WHAT to do now.... that crank cost me 250 bucks!! My crank extractor won't thread into the crank anymore, so I guess that just means not only the frame but the crank is toasted, too?
BTW: It looks like only the first 3 threads are torn out, and it almost looks like the threads on my extractor are messed up now. It's only the top 3 threads on the crank and extractor.. so do you think there's any possibility of me getting off off? Once it's off, that's all I need.. it will go back on the new frame easily. Are there any other ways to extract the crank besides using those threads?

So your pretty much tellin us you only threaded the crank extractor 3 threads in and it seemed like it would work so you tried to pull it off and uh oh?:D Dang I really dont know, you gotta be real careful when doing that stuff. I dont know if there is a (reaming/facing tool to do that) or maybe I am totally off by saying that, to fix your problem. I guess the untimate way of getting it off would be cutting it up. The frame and bb are still fine, maybe email raceface and tell them that you did everything right and it got stripped? I think they might get a little suspecions about the 3 threads stripped only though.

Park Tools website has some instructions that may help.

I'd check Sheldon Brown's site, too. Unfortunately, what you describe is easy to do. I know. I've done it too.
Ah!! I got it out. Fortunately all it took was a little bit of elbow greese when threading in the extractor. I guess I didn't crank it all the way in the first time, so it only screwed into three threads, and then when I tried to extract it, it just tore out the top three threads. I got it off, though!! The buildup is almost finished.. just have to set up the derailler, run the brake cables, and then install the cassette when it gets here later this week! I'm psyched.. at this rate I should be able to ride my new bike this weekend :)
