I'm looking to go on my first tour this August and am considering following route 100 all the way up VT. I was wondering if anyone else has done this route and if they have any pointers, places to stay, sections to avoid...any info would be great. I've searched online but found mostly loops, i'm looking for roads going south to north preferably in VT. Any other good roads to ride in VT (minimal traffic, scenic, good for biking)?

Ive done sections of 100, Wilmington VT. north. Some killer hills both up and down. Hard not to find find someplace to camp, if you dont mind stelth camping. Over all the road was not to bad to ride traffic wise.

I used to live in Vt back in the 70s, and as I recall Route 100 went through beautiful country, but that it was a fairly major road, at least by Vt. standards. One of the challenges of riding in that Green Mountain State is that whlle the mountains are not particularly high, they are steep, and the traffic tends to get funnelled onto roads like route 100. I would recommend that you check out a road atlas like this to see if you can find something quieter. I wish I had better info for you: http://www.delorme.com/atlasgaz/

Rt 100 isn't a bad ride. a lot of cyclists ride it in the summer. Just keep in mind that a lot of 40' Motorhomes dragging thier SUV's are on that same road, just watch your back around the busier areas. Rt 100 from Waterbury to Newport is my favorite section

i had a feeling about it would be a road of choice for a lot of cars/motorhomes too. I'll be using a GPS so i might just jump on random roads and hope for the best. Thanks though.

The congestion is mostly between Wilmington & Mt Snow, Killington & Rt 4 and Waterbury & Stowe. Most of the route has good shoulders and you will find a few adjacent roads to avoid some of the traffic.
