hey guys, what kinda helmets are u riding with? I picked up a specialized decibel (or whatever its called) the other day but im thinking of just getting a skateboard helmet. Im not doing really aggressive stuff so i dont need a full helmet but if and when i fall i would like the best i can get, ya kno? what do u guys think?

decibel!?! wow thats a nice helmet (i use it for road riding which it was made for). your helmet all depends on what type of riding youre going to be doing... they basically all are of the same level of protection (they have to pass safety standards). If you are going to be doing much downhill/freeride stuff i suggest you bite the bullet and get a full face, everybody likes their face after all. Dont just go with whatever is popular, helmets are to keep your brains inside your head. stay protected!

I use a Giro E2 (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=21100&subcategory_ID=4210) and a Giro Atmos (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=21091&subcategory_ID=4210). They are both great helmets, very comfortable and allow for great ventilation.

I use the cheap kind.

If you crack your brain bucket you need to replace it. I'd be much happier replacing a $30 helmet than a $100 one :)

My kids like Giros - well vented, which keeps you head cool & protected. This year's helmets are a Havoc & an Atmos

I think you should try on helmets and not make a thread about it.

they basically all are of the same level of protection (they have to pass safety standards).

Any college student who has ever taken a course pass/fail will tell you that simply "passing" is not the same as getting an A. Helmets have to meet a minimum criteria, whether they go above and beyond is completely undocumented. Some may perform significantly better in crashes than others.

I know that all helmets must pass standards. i was wondering if people prefer road helmets or skateboard helmets. or are there people out there that use full face all the time.

OK then, I ride with a bell slant. Really love that helmet.

I use an Azonic T-55 for everything I do, which includes XC, its not very hot (and I have long, abundant hair), protects well, visibility is great and its light and doesn't encumber, I was afraid in getting a full face at first but I've realized "XC style" helmets don't provide as much protection, and I rather sweat a little more and have my whole head intact than wear those dorky XC helmets and bust my chin open on a crash... not cool.

Besides, the looks factor definitely helps FF helmets.

Well, when your riding a 2 hours xc ride in the sun I don't think a full face is going to work. If you can bear it, than power to you. Of course, I find it hard to believe anyone can ride xc for more than 15 minutes without feeling so hot and sweaty that they would pass out.

I have a Specialized AirForce: it fits my lopsided head. $33 @ LBS.
It provides enough ventilation to keep my head cool under the Texas sun.

Hmmm decent brand full face start at 60$ or so... example of that is Bell Bellistic, Azonic T-55/Fury, Giro something can be found for 50-75 and are great helmets, I fail to see the logic of getting a 60$ walmart full face lol.

A lot of manufacturers will replace the helmet for free within a certain time period or just charge you 30 bucks or something for a replacement.
