What size shelter do you use for touring? Why?

I also use a compact 2-person (otherwise known as a 1 1/2 person vs. a true 2 person)because it is a good comprimize between size/space vs. cost/weight for solo touring.

When solo, a small two-person. When with a partner, a three person.

I started sleeping solo on my backpacking trips a few years ago and have been amazed by how much better I sleep at night (my wife doesn't snore as loud as my backpacking buddies!).

There are advantages to solo tents:

1. You don't disturb others (and they don't disturb you) when nature calls in the middle of the night.

2. The smaller size retains your body heat more effectively during the colder seasons, allowing one to carry a lighter sleeping bag.

3. The smaller footprint provides more tent-site opportunities.

4. Solo tents are smaller and in many cases, significantly lighter than a two-man tent.

5. If you decide to tour solo, you'll do so more efficiently than with a larger and heavier shelter you don't need.

6. It's just YOUR stuff in the tent!

In the heat of the summer I'll usually leave the sleeping bag behind and sometimes the tent, opting instead for a synthetic blanket and a tarp (the U.S. Army poncho, staked out and propped up with a stick or hiking pole works great in this capacity). If the season/location could produce bugs, I'll take along my Outdoor Research Bug Bivy as well.

My touring partner and I carry a 3-person tent. One of us takes the tent and stakes. The other carries the rain fly and poles. The tent is plenty large for the two of us and some gear. Large vestibules keep the rest of our gear out of the elements.

Travelling solo, I'd carry the same tent. It's not that heavy, and it's what I've got.

Well, mine is theoretically a two person tent, although you'd be hard pressed to fit two people in it. It does, however, give me enough room to store my panniers as well as myself at night without getting too cramped.

I always take a tarp. It's light, roomy, it breathes, I can cook under it and there are as many way to set it up as there are tarp users. The only thing it doesn't do well is keeping bugs at bay. That's when I carry a small 2 person tent.

I used to camp on my tours. Now I find that to be a pain in the butt. I'll only do it if I'm forced to (i.e. Iceland, Bolivia). In that case, I take a 2-person tent. Give me a hotel room anyday!

2 person tent for me as others have said it gives me enough room to be comfortable and store some gear out of the weather. It would be cramped with two people int he tent though

If a SAG is carrying my gear, it's the Eureka Equinox4. Lots of room!! If I have to carry
it, then it's the Flashlight.
