It's our first, a CoMo Mocha, in primary colors -- Alan kindly sent us a photo to drool over while waiting for it to arrive at College Park Bicycles -- next weekend we'll be riding together, we're pretty psyched!

We've had great fun -- and spent a silly amount of money for brand-new tandemers -- acquiring stuff to get ready, including the custom-painted pump from CoMo, and a bright red Arkel Tail Rider bag that I first saw here on R900's (John's) Trek (http://tinyurl.com/n85ax) -- the jerseys we've acquired, tho, will reflect my PC-builder's fondness for AMD processors, http://tinyurl.com/b9ft6 (see, e.g., http://tinyurl.com/nuyf9, note the 2-monitor-spanning desktop wallpaper) -- but they're mostly green, which works too.
We rented a kinda crummy tandem last summer, which convinced us that we wanted to buy one, but what with one thing and another, financially (since we didn't want to buy a crummy one), it had to wait for my fed job's annual bonus, which happens in early May, so we've been waiting for most of a year. I'd obviously been combing the websites (including this forum, duh) for months as The Time approached, and as soon as the bonus happened we dashed immediately to College Park Bikes and ordered....
OK, I'm going to be quiet and calm down now and just wait for it to get here.. . . . . . . .

Kinda like my old Mapei painted COlnago: you could blow chunks and it blended right in....
We did a short ride around the U Md campus near the shop, and it's as lovely to ride as it is too look at....

Very nice, she looks great finished. We use the same Egg Beater peddles on our Robusta, our Supremo and my Co-Mo Exspresso road bike, the Egg Beater performes well. I like the mountain bike shoe way better due to the fact I have had a road shoe slip on the pavement more than once at a stop with the tandem over the years. Now that I use a mountain type bike shoe and peddle I have solved the shoe sliding out or slipping on the pavement supporting the tandem at a stop, plus you can walk around a lot better in a mountain bike type of shoe :D

Looks Great! You'll need to give us a full report after you get a long ride in. Seems like I'm still tuning the fit on ours. We are suppose to go on a longer ride Saturday, but the weather is looking like is might be cool, so hopefully the rain will hold off.

After the 3 mi intro ride, I replaced the CoMo saddle with a Juliana saddle (which I'd bought on eBay last December because it's supposed to be a good female-rider saddle, I thought it would be kinda cool for my wife to have a saddle with her name on it, and it was a fun little Xmas present to remind her that a tandem was coming in 6 months...), and we did 17 yesterday, which was great.
Tho we're not sure yet about the Juliana seat -- Julie's not used to riding at all, so we need to parse what's new-rider discomfort and what's this-isn't-the-right-seat-for-her discomfort -- Chad at College Park Bikes said if the Juliana isn't right we should bring the bike in to the shop with some patience, and he'll happily switch seats out until we find the right one.... Any insights out there (urls?) on female saddles?
(I switched the pix with ones I took in the sunlight yesterday ... it's so absurdly pretty, the first scratch will probably kill us! I did manage to pop the chain off the front chainwheel on the first serious hill, not scratching the paint, but as soon as we got home I installed the JumpStop (http://www.gvtc.com/~ngear/whatis.html) I'd already bought for this bike....)

First scratches on any new bike are 'painful', but only goes to show that you use the machine instead of utilizing it as a wallhanging!
If stoker is not used to riding, it will take a while to reach a level of 'comfort' on any sadlle. If saddle position is correct, it just takes time to toughen up the buns a bit!
Also while a saddle may 'feel' great, riding it is the true test. And what feels good going around the block, may not feel as good after 10 miles, or 20, etc. Our suggestion is not to go for a real softy saddle; ride as hard a saddle as butt can tolerate. On longer rides, carry a sheepskin seatcover or saddle pad. When butt starts hurting, slap on the pad. When you finish the ride, take the pad off . . . repeat as often as necessary. It will never be as comfortable as sitting on the couch . . . but you never get anywhere sitting on that couch!

New pics look great. My wife uses a cushy Serfas RX for Women on her road bike, Terry Womens Liberator on our old tandem, Terry Butterfly on her mountain bike, and a Trek Womens Race Lux (TI rail) saddle that came standard on our T2000. I think she likes the Trek saddle the best. The Terry's don't fit her that great, and when we bought our singles the Serfas' wide well padded seat felt much better then the original that came on her Cannondale, I think it's really to soft for longer distances. Anyway the Trek has been the best so far.
I've also been using the Trek saddle on our Tandem as well, I don't like it as well as my road saddle as it doesn't have a cut-out, but since we'll be riding Trek's on our trip this Fall, I figured I better get use to a Trek saddle, so I don't need to drag something else along when we travel.

P.S. I guess I should be calling the Trek saddles - Bontrager saddles...

Brought my new wife into riding last year (on a single). I was nervous about it because I spent beaucoup time and dollars getting my ex on a seat that she could tolerate. (Not like, but tolerate.)
Our Specialized dealer here had her sit on a special foam pad to "record" her sit bone indentations. She then measured the spacing of her sit bones and found a Specialized saddle to match -- which happened to be a $35 women's mountain bike seat. Her saddle has been a non-issue, thank God.
I put the same saddle on our tandem this year. Now if I could just accomplish the same results with her feet / shoes ...........
