Ok, what kind of addiction is this?

I am both working and have been back in school as well, and did very little cycling over the last school year. With the summer off, I'm trying to get back into really good shape - cycling, some weights/core strength, very good diet - and am strategizing for keeping the bike in the mix during my next (and final) year in school. Everything is going really well - putting in lots of miles, eating well, gaining muscle, losing fat, etc.

However, the thing that I can't shake is the beer craving. I've cut back to drinking a 6-er once a week for a long while, but even that messes me up. I'm not a 20 yr. old anymore, and I don't want to hit the bike the next morning after a beer night, and I eat like a racehorse the next day to boot. What is the deal? I mean, I'm obviously not physically addicted at this level of consumption, but I'm surprised that the psych effect is this strong...especially considering how serious I am about this summer.

I am determined to be focused on fitness, but damn that bubbly stuff!

Instead of holding off until drinking a beer until you feel the need to kill a six pack, why not have one or two beers a night? At least, that is what the twelve pack said to me in the store.

If you want to have a beer, have A beer. Not three, not a six pack. A beer. If you can't stop after one, they go one the wagon. Stop totally. Drink 3 liters of water, eat four cans of tuna and two bowls of beans. You won't have time for the beer.

Do you drink all six at one time? That can't be good. Drink one each night and talk Sundays off. Or something like that.

Simple, just replace the drinking with smoking, problem solved.

What about the non-alchoholic stuff? Worth a try. Sounds like you are in denial about addiction.

That can be changed with a couple of drinks.

I bet you're right about addiction, and the other comment about going totally on the wagon is where I'm headed it seems.

Not sure what addiction is.. I gave beer up for 12 weeks and didn't miss it. Now I am drinking it again 3-4 nights per week and don't feel "addicted" to it. I still cannot find a definition of addiction. Does addiction mean that I cannot stop drinking? if that is the case then count me out. I drink beer mainly because I absolutely love the taste of the stuff and it is nice to relax with a few after a long hot ride. I know a lttle old 92 year old lady who told me she drank a 6 pack of beer every day from age 25 to age 84 thats 59 years. At age 84 her doctor put her on a medication and jokingly told her not to drink because the med and booze don't mix well. So she stopped drinking. During those 59 years she held down a job raised a family and was quite active in the community. She even has a building named after her. 6 cans of beer is way way too much but it had absolutely no effect on this womans health or life. I guess she was not addicted? She said she had no trouble stopping whatsoever.

try drinking a glass of wine every night, it's the alcohol that pulls you in not the flavor of the beer. Plus a glass of wine is good for you

sounds like you have a problem with binge drinking.

like others have said, instead of drinking a six-pack once a week, drink one beer every day. i'll usually have a couple beers a day during the week and maybe a couple more a day on the weekend, but not at a sitting.

i'm an alcoholic, but i keep it under control by setting limits. only one beer a day without food, etc. it works for me.
