Garage sale EZ-1 Lite

I've found one that a guy is asking $300 for at a garage sale. He says it is 3 years old and that he had bought a pair for him and his wife to ride. She apparently couldn't get used to riding recumbent and so it's got less than 100 miles on it and it looks it. Comes with a rack, bag, cateye speedo and the stationary trainer. Any suggestions on how much to offer? Is $300 fair? He hadn't sold it by the end of the day, so I figure I'll go back tomorrow once I get some input.

Looks like I'm now a member of the 'bent clan. Managed to talk him down to $200 too. :)
I know there are faster, nicer and just plain better recumbent bikes out there, but the first day has been a blast! For the money I can't complain.

I had actually been wanting to buy a 'bent trike. I'd have to save up a pretty good while to get one, and I probably still will, but since I'd never ridden a 'bent before, I thought it might be good to buy this one and just try it out.

Nah, James, if anything I'm fortunate to have a mother-in-law who remembered me saying somthing about wanting some sort of recumbent, and then calling me when SHE found it while garage sale-ing. (sailing?)

I suppose you could say sailing thru the garage sales...and yes you are lucky...It will be a good way to ezz into the bent world without hurting your billfold. And you can save up for that trike or whatever your preferences lead you to do.......... peace el padre

That's an awesome deal. Heck, you could turn around and sell it on eBay for twice the price, and use those funds to get a trike! ;)

Enjoy your 'new' EZ-1. Eventually, you will develop The Itch. The itch to upgrade, that is!

Thanks Guys. We were actually thinking that I could turn around and sell it when I was close to my savings goal on the trike. Well, then I let my wife take it for a spin...

Looks like I may be handing the EZ-1 down to her when trike time comes, LOL.
Anything that encourages her to come along for the ride is good by me.

The more I ride this thing the bigger my smile gets. Even in two days of riding I can feel myself getting better with 'bent handling. I know I'll still want to upgrade eventually, but I'm definitely not regretting the purchase.

Now I'm thinking underseat panniers and maybe the Hostelshoppe seatback bag. Does anyone have what they would call a must-have accessory for this bike?

A Mirror. Either a bar end mirror or one that mounts on your helmet or glasses. I had a Mirrycle sp? bar end mirror that worked well. I ended up going to a glasses mounted set up that I quickly got used to and loved until the arm broke on it a couple of days ago. I almost feel naked without it now. I want to buy a helmet mounted unit buy my LBS quit carrying it last week. Since it is much more difficult to see behind you on a recumbent (one of its few flaws) I highly suggest getting a mirror of some sort.

Eyeglass mirror here. It's weird at first but you get used to it. Agreed on the need though.

Thanks guys. In fact the first thing I did when I got home was transfer the Mountain Mirrycle mirror from my winter commuter. On my DF bikes I consider a mirror to be a luxury, but it is definitely necessary on the 'bent. I like the look of the Mueller ERX fairing, but that may be a tad too pricy just now. Does look nice though :D

1728717286You could make a fairing out of coroplast like I did for about $10. It isn't as aerodynamic as the Mueller but it increases your visibility and keeps the road debris, rain and sun off of you to some extent. If you're really good you can rig up an advertising on it and make some money or get a free guitar like someone I know ;-}).

Interesting Idea. I was considering making an enclosure for the rear out of coroplast. So where can you find that stuff at. I've never seen it anywhere other than a factory I once worked at. Then again, I've never needed to look for it before either.

You might check out the Sun back of seat briefcase bag for the EZ bikes. Much less than the Hostel Shoppe and it worked fine when I was commuting on an EZ-1.

Average, try your local sign shop. It's the same stuff they make yardsale and political signs out of. You might have to special order one big enough to work as a fairing.
