bike is part of a potential trade w/ a buddy of mine (along w/ the Miyata 912 for an old Mac). I'd love to build it up, but not restore it. Unfortunately, it's really in poor shape, w/ every steel part rusted in place. The frame and forks are really the only salvageable bits, but it would make such a cool cruiser w/ a Shimano internal 5-speed hub, etc...
What does the list think??

I think if you like the bike, then cost really isn't an object. We don't restore old bikes for their "value" as a classic, rather because we think the bike is kinda cool, as a labor of love. I say go for it!:D

Hi- I'm restoring a '34 Hawthorne Motobike I got for nothing, and I'm in the same shape.
Advice: pre-war bikes are getting really hard to find, so I'd definiely get it. I could help with my experiece so far tearing down and cleaning my bike. If you need a place to get rid of those rusted on parts, I'm all ears. The frame should clean up nice being aluminum. Steel would have to be repainted but aluminum ya just take off the oxide and maybe clearcoat it. check this link out http://www.firstflightbikes.com/hawthorn.htm
check out oldroads.com too, they have a forum. And www.nostalgic.net, where you'll see lots of nice restorations.
Questions: Is you crank the 'snowflake' pattern?
Is your headbadge the M over W? Don't lose the headbadge for sure...
Tire & wheel condition? 24" wouldn't be impossible to replace since kids' mtb are also 24".
How much chrome is gone? probably a lot... Wald sells replacement vintage stuff including chrome fenders, but I'm not sure about 24".
Definitley don't chuck the crank or skiptooth chain either. I know I could use those, my chain is stretched.
good luck
