Hi

I have a production frame that has cracked and isn't covered by warranty. I am looking at a new frame, but I am thinking of trying to get this one repaired and use it as a spare bike.

This is a Pinarello Dogma 2004 (I think), but it is a magnesium alloy, so a straight weld is probably out. Someone suggested to me that I could get it carbon fibre wrapped to strengthen the join. He said that they would drill the ends of the cracks so they wouldn't spread any more and then reinforce the area with carbon fiber.

So, does anyone know if this is possible?

The second thing, is does anyone know of any frame builders in Sydney Australia who may be able to do this? I am open to sending the frame interstate if I have to, but being able to deal with someone local is preferred.

Any other tips on getting this repaired economically are also welcome.

that crack looks like a straight line so me thinks it's where the thin part of the tube ends and the butting begins. is it a small frame? it looks like they cut the tube too short, the crack would have started in the weld and continued around the tube. IMHO if a frame cracks like that and it wasn't involved in a crash it should be coverered by the warranty. but I guess it's too late for that. I'd say it's time for a new frame.

Ring up a welding/engineering shop and ask if they can weld a mag alloy. I would think your average bike shop would be next to useless in this instance due to there lack of fabrications no how. There is half a chance it could be welded with aluminium MIG because a THINK they have (differing) levels of magnesium in the wire. A shop which could help out would be Cecil Walker Cycles in Elizibeth St Melbourne.
