Velonews is reporting that Simoni made up the stuff about Basso offering to take money if he let Simoni win the Giro stage. Read it here http://www.velonews.com/race/int/articles/9966.0.html
I'm shocked and amazed. What a whiner.

I'll second that.
I thought that my man Basso handled it well when he said this was the greatest day of his cycling life and he just wasn't even going to talk about it any longer.

Both Simoni and Simeoni are whiners;)
Does that mean that after I get married and start makin' babies I'll start winning races? Seems to have worked pretty well... :D

Only if you have $2million salary to provide support for the wife and kid, so you can train. Otherwise, it cuts into training time a bit.

Simoni made it up? Oh no. He has razed the very foundations of reality. Everything I've thought to be constant and true in this life is suddenly gone. Up is down. Black is white. Night is day. Steel is real.
Idiot.

It's so gracious for Simoni to retract his statement...maybe he should retract from cycling.
To think I once had respect for this cry baby:rolleyes:

Little do you all know that Basso paid him off. Just a little cash for coverup money and the bad publicity that he would surely get for retracting his statement. After all, Basso has a little cash to spare but more importantly a new baby. How could anyone possibly think Simoni made such a statement up?
Well, you should read the whole article, if he did not say so he was disqualified until after the Tour....
You should listen to the interview with Simoni and Basso at the start of the next day tappa after the Aprica. It is clear who is telling the true. When Basso tell Simoni to not lie, Simoni ask Basso if he should say how much, at that point is clear Basso wants to cover it. Too bad it is in italian.....
Simoni made a mistake and spoke about something that should not be known.
What do you think is the impact of this whole mess with BIG RACE one of the big sponsor of the Giro and the official place to bet on the race results? I am sure they are not too happy about it.

/\/\/\So you guys think that Simoni is telling the truth and Basso paid him to cover it up? Simoni may well be excluded from the tour and suspended from cycling over this and you think Basso could give him 10-20-30 thousand dollars and he'd go along with it? His reputation is ruined and he is facing sanctions, 30k is chicken feed to a guy who's making a million a year, he's not going to risk everything for some cash.
Past is prologue with this guy, he made it up and complained about getting beat. Remember the time line, first he accused Basso of asking him not to drop him on the descent in exchange for the win and he calls him a doper. Then the next day he claims Basso offered to sell him the stage. He's just a very poor loser, and had a big mouth, not a good combo.

Of course, none of us know exactly what happened, but the various scenarios all point to Simoni being a less than honorable guy regardless. If he is truly admitting to lying just to save the sanctions, then he's as unscrupulous as they come. If he was telling the truth, he obviously broke the unspoken rules of the Pros. The only true cycling is the stuff most of us do. The rest is a big corporate monopoly that is driven exclusively by MONEY!

What can I say? I wanted to see if anyone would bite! :)

Someone makes up a lie, then it is established that he lied (again, he's done this before), so there will always be people who will buy the other side of the story because its fits their beliefs, even though both parties then claim it is untrue.
THAT is exactly why GWB is in power.

Simoni's activities at the Giro were worse for the sport than doping. He's not just a doper and a liar, he's a poor sport and should be excluded from racing. My guess is no sponsor will pay this jerk in 2007. His career is hopefully over.
Doc (DocRay we seem to have a plethora of DRs in this forum),
Leave the politics out of this, ok? geez there's enough controversy
without dragging GW, Bin Laden, Mulroney et al into this miasma.
Now onto Simoni.
I think there is some truth to what Gibo is saying, don't get me wrong
I highly doubt that Basso offered him the win for 30k Euro, but the
whole thing about waiting for Basso on the descent and an unwritten
code that is someone helps the "patron" that someone is gifted a
stage win.
Yes I know according to the Badger (Hinault for you 99ers) NO GIFTS,
but it is race etiquette and the precedent is not unknown.
I think Simoni was just Pissed off about that and shot his mouth off.
Nice of him to retract it.

Agreed, but you don't call a guy a doper or make accusations of bribes, you remember the slight and you pay him back on the road. Simoni was out line period.
according to the Badger (Hinault for you 99ers)n LOL!
