What is the best energy bar? Tell me what you personally think is the best energy bar? What gives you the most energy in the longest time?

While I've tried those mentioned and have found them to be OK, I think for the money the energy bars I get at Safeway, especially the fruit ones are just as good. They're supposedly packed with the fruit of a couple of apples etc. each, are easy to eat and taste good. They're made by Sunripe.

Nutrition bars are kind of pricey (maybe $1-2 each?). I buy raisons (a good natural energy source) at Walmart. You can get a 6 pack of small raison boxes for $1.29. Each box fits easily in your shirt pocket.

I like the Power Bars but I don't buy them often. The reason is that there are few places that sells them in Singapore. The place I know off is like quite far from my home, not really convenient.
They taste great anyway, really good as you know that something beneficial is going down your digestive system to aid recovery.

I was on a organized ride a few years ago and one of the rest stops was manned by two grandmother types.
They offered me a cookie explaining that their grandson had told them about powerbars, and they tasted one and thought it was terrible.
So they decided to make their own.
Using the magic balance they added there own "secret" good stuff.....POWERBAR eat your heartout.

I saw some hippie types selling brownies on the side of the road once.. told me they were "magic" brownies.. I passed... but I wondered what made them so magical ?
:p

I believe that evergy bars are not worth the cost....
You can get high calories and low fat (per gram) from the following snacks at very low cost (much less than $1/100 grams) :
dried fruits (any, but I prefer dried figs)
bulk dark chocolate (the no-brand or house-brand carried by any supermarket)
After a high-carb, low-fat dinner the night before and breakfast in the morning, these snacks will power me while cycling the whole day....

as for bars... power bars are good but when it's cold they turn tough as leather... for cold weather I like cliff bars...

I'm sorry Raiyn, but my world DOES revolve around Wally World (Wal-Mart)! I'm down there at least three times a week for this and that. Wally World also provides most of my social life. I never fail to see someone I know when I'm plying the aisles! You should know that Wally World can be kind of sneaky, which adds to their impressive profitability. When you go there for an oil change, they usually take 30-45 minutes, even if you're the first one in at 8 a.m. So to kill time, you walk around the store and usually buy things. (I did yesterday -- $36.49). They know this, and encourage it, providing shopping carts in the oil change area. Valvoline, just down the street, takes only 15 minutes for an oil change, but they're $8 more expensive for the same service, same oil. So much for Wally World's competition. I don't think you can go wrong buying stock in Wally World for the long haul. These Bentonville, Arkansas ya-hoos know what they're doing!

while I was getting ready to ride my first century last month, I ate $1 a piece Power Bars. On the ride, the SAG stops had regular old Nature Valley granola bars. I ate them and finished the ride in 5:54. Guess what I eat now on my long rides?

I'm with you, ngateguy!
While training for my first marathon I got hooked on Powerbars. So I still eat them while road or mtn riding. However, most of my friends swear by GU. I've tried it but it upsets my stomach on serious rides.

how about good old banana, but bringing banana on your back pocket can be very messy,

the additional question should be: what are the energy bars used for. the body has different nutrient needs depending on whether you are eating the bar before a workout, during a workout, or after a workout. it also depends on the type of workout you will be doing, such as endurance or strength.

I've tried all kinds. For some time, my favorite was Cliff....until I switched to a trail mix (or sorts) I make myself....not the fat-laden, processed stuff, but whole grain cereals, soynuts, and dried fruit. WAY MORE ENERGY AND ENDURANCE!!!!!
Metal Cowgal
I agree with Metal Cowgal as I use pistacios(or other nuts) and a oats, dried coconut, dried fruit(usu. apricot due to high potassium)mix. For speed I top apricots with unfiltered honey with a touch of coconut and oats .
As far as energy bars go, I really like the You Are What You Eat Energy Bars (http://www.urwhatueat.com/index.php3). They don't taste like you're eating the tar off the road nor are they messy so you can eat them while on the bike. They're cheaper than most energy bars too.
I also like the Cliff Iced Bars but only if I'm stopped and there's a place to wash my hands afterwards. Although I won't take them on a ride because they too can be messy, I can also be found munching on Luna bars if I want a fast snack. I think they have the best tasting and greatest selection of flavours. Yes, I know they're for women but I'm trying to get in touch with my feminine side. |8^) I got my wife hooked on them too.

The Powerbar wrapper is too hard to open, especially when it's really hot or really cold. :(

trmcgeehan: open package and precut the bars into pieces. in summer i tuck pieces under my shorts at the quad and get 'em when i need 'em.
fig nootens and harvest bars are fine for me. and the people who complain about 97 cents for a powerbar are the same people who complain about the cost of a breakfast cereal that will feed you for weeks at pennies a serving.
i never buy water, anything in a convenience store, have been known to go into a gas station and fill my empty waterbottle with ice from the soda machine n/c. buy powdered gatorade and get as much use out of my stuff as possible.
i am not against anything or anywhere where i can get value. this includes wal-mart. when you have a family you value one stop shopping and value. i challenge you to find anyone who doesn't want those things. some people don't like wal-mart...fine. but they wear their policies on their sleeve so you see what you get. imho it is much better than the cell phone service or cable company, insurance co., where the books are closed shut and no one knows where the true value is in their shell game.
I'm kinda partial to Clif bars. Either, cranberry-apple-cherry or apricot. The Luna bar Lemon Zest isn't too bad.

Clovervale Peanutbutter & Jelly "sandwich" bars. (www.clovervale.com) Basically PB&J on Graham crackers individually wraped. I came across these things while doing a charity ride from San Francisco to L.A. They were passing them out at the aid stations, I passed on them for the first 3 days as I didn't know what they were. Finally I tried one and was instantly hooked. I buy them direct @ 40 bars for $20.00 and they ship free!!
I find Fig Newtons to be very good 11 gms of carb's each, also buy Pria Power Bars for .67c at Walmarts 110 calories 16 gms of carb's, energy depends on carb's loss of glucose in the blood leads to a bonk, one needs about 1 gram of carb per minute to
stay strong averaging around 15 MPH or little more.

you know, I was looking at the cookies I was eating at lunch today, "Nutter Butters". They actually aren't too bad for you. They have 36g or carbs, of which 15g is sugar. Sure, its no powerbar, but I think that it has the best nutrition of any cookie out there.

Are these the pads or the traditional nutter-butters? I personally like the pads.

Well once my bannanas and Fig Newtons are gone I root around until I find my Clif bar. All those energy bars taste like flavored sawdust, but when you start to bonk and there isn't anything else around they work pretty darn good. Oh BTW, I get my Clifs from Costco where a 12 variety pack goes for around $6.00.
