Commuting - Rode to vote

So I had to exchange a pair of cycling gloves and vote this afternoon, so I made a ride out of it. It was wonderful to get things done AND get my exercise in at the same time! I really hope when I get married I move closer to work so I can do this on a daily basis.

I went to the voting station on my way to work tonight...my wife told me that they would think I am a Democrat pulling up on my bicycle! :D

I almost always ride my bike to vote. However, around here -- unlike in, say, Alabama -- my turning up on a bicycle is of no help in determining party affiliation. Poll workers and campaigners still wonder if I'm a moderate democrat, liberal democrat, or ultra-liberal democrat (...and I'm not telling).

I'm still registered as non-partisan, and didn't ask for a party's primary ballot, so I'll keep them guessing :D If I did register, it probably wouldn't be donkey or elephant anyway.

I forgot about the rollers on the way to the polling place today, though. Haven't rode them in 10 years. Like automatic interval training!!!

I swung by the polls on the way back from my early morning training ride. So, I guess since I was standing there in the full roadie kit, there probably wasn't much doubt that I rode my bike there. However, I am a "decline to state" and I get to pick the party ballot I want to vote.

I walk to my polling station a block and change away. :D However, since I got my folder last year, I ride almost everywhere that's not in my 'hood to get things done. It's gotten to the point where I start to fret after being on the subway even a short while. Take today, for example: I'm going to Brooklyn to see an old pal who's in town for a conference but I can't ride in the rain to meet an old pal, showing-up soaking wet. Boo!

Ride your bike to give blood next time. Finally, after the 4th time in a row I've done this, they stopped fretting over whether I was going to pass out on the way home or something. I mean heck, it's only 5 miles, and only about 1/2 uphill...
The great part is that if you're there in bike kit and a helmet, you can eat a bunch of cookies guilt-free! and they don't mind the extra juice! (of course, they never have said anything, but the guilt normally comes from within).

I had a great election day! I commute to work by bike, 13 miles one way, and since I work fulltime for the Alabama Air National Guard they give us paid time to vote. So I got to spend most of my day on the bike, get in 52 miles and get paid for it! Not to mention the old ladies faces when I showed up in spandex was priceless... Unfortunately I'm a blue dot in a very Red-Neck state...

I also regularly ride my bike to vote, but don't get many looks anymore, as everyone is used to it since I also ride my bike to work year-round, and work and elections are the same thing since I'm the City Clerk. If the election workers give me weird looks I fire 'em! Our country may be a democracy, but my office is a benevolent dictatorship run by a cyclist-despot!
