Training & Nutrition - Heart Disease

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi all,
Only 38 but I was just diagnosed with a mild ischemia--blocked artery-- going on many drugs and no angiogram for now.
Mild inferior ischemia diagnosed with a nuclear perfusion (thallium stress test)
No definite symptoms, strong family history, high cholesterol, blood pressure is normal- high.
I'm basically fit, but about 40 lbs overweight... do exercise a lot but still eat too much!! Just lost 7 lbs and trying hard though.

Anyone else here in my situation?
How about max heart rate?
My cardio is overly cautious and anal and feels that going over 120 BPM is a risk.
I've seen many other med journals/papers that reccomend different rates etc.
Any ideas thoughts suggestions?

I had a thalliom stress test in 2001, Im 33, It was normal, I cant even remember why I had it. I think that I was having some shest pains or something.
Surely, you and your Doctor tlaked about exercise and how you planned to reverse this condition.
Go easy, 120 HR seems low but with your condition, you should at least tell your Doctor you exercise plans.
Good Luck

if you have a diagnosed ischemia then you must not raise heart rate much at all.
you must get a complete workup and -second opinion- from another doctor as well.
get coppies of all the tests and pictures of your heart. keep them with you and
research everything yourself and compare to what the doctor says. it will help you.
lose your extra weight NOW. no screwing around, no half-assed efforts.
you do this by doing 1 hour workouts every day where you build a sweat but not much more.
heart rate maybe 135 to 140 max. that will be enough.
count your calories. your life is gonna have to change immediately.
you should be scared ****less and able to start immediately with no excuses. this is serious business.
these things are a result of disease of the heart, and they do cause early death !
you must lower your ldl cholesterol and raise your hdl somehow, preferably with diet.
drugs suck. but they do work
tofu pups and veggie burgers do pretty good.
you must take an aspirin in the am and pm.
you must get on a low dose of ACE inhibitor.
keep riding, but long slow distance. no sprinting until you get this cleared by an expert.
if you are worried about this situation (and you should be) ask the doctor for mild stress
pill so you can think about it and act upon it without raising blood pressure with worry.
I am lucky my BP is usually 95-100 over 60-65, and cholesterol is normal. My BP goes
to 130-85 if I think to hard about my diabetes. if I take some stress pills, it goes right
back down to 100-65...which is a good thing.
take care of your ticker.

Great question for your cardiologist..............
What did he or she tell you?

+1
Your question is definitely not one for an internet forum.
Oh, I see now, "cardio" is cardiologist. And says stay under 120. I would heed that advice.
Did you have any symptoms, and what is ischemia in bikeforum terms?
Thanks all, I don't pla on taking any advice here verbatim...just looking for similar experiences and thoughts
Did you have any symptoms, and what is ischemia in bikeforum terms?
blood vessels around the heart become impaired and a band of tight
heart muscle starts to form, making a section of a ventricle 'brittle'
and unable to pump as much under extreme loads
it's fixable if the blood vessels around the heart get repaired by
chilling out and reducing clogging...or going in with a cutter and
roto-rooting it. problem is, it starts in the capillaries and they
are unfixable except by diet and drugs.
no worries though as long as it doesn't progress

you sound very aloof about your health. (sorry but I mean to be serious for your benefit) Saying you are in shape and saying you have ischemia and mentioning you are 40 pounds overweight just doesn't jive.
First off using the term "Mild" when discussing cardiac ischemia is almost oxymoronic. You can have mild blockage which is an OK term to use but when ischemia shows up then the matter becomes more serious. You likely know what ischemia is (not enough blood to myocardium). I have taken care of hundreds if not thousands of Pre and post MI pts in my career. One thing I have noticed is the Thallium scan is absolutely the most unreliable test known to man.
YOU NEED TO GO TO A CARDIOLOGIST FOR A SECOND OPINION. IF i WERE YOU I WOULD DEMAND A CARDIAC CATH TO DETERMINE IF YOU HAVE AND HOW BAD YOUR BLOCKAGE IS. Why did you have a thallium scan? Were you symptomatic?
GET a Cardiac Cath...Cased closed.

Telling someone to take ASA is stupid. What if the guy has a GI bleed. man just tell the guy to go to a doctor.
