I was staying in a hotel once where I saw someone take the elevator up one floor, to get to the exercise room.
I have been forced to do that kind of thing many times. In some hotels you cannot re-enter a floor from the stairwell. In other words the stairwell serves only as a fire escape where you must exit to the ground floor.

I can't see how it's in Best Buy's interest to put up a bike rack. They want you to buy a widescreen T.V. and only have the DVD's to get you in the door. Not to many are going to cart the T.V. home on their bike, I dunno, maybe they offer free shipping...

My wife and I bought her computer after riding to Best Buy. Didn't see any busses going by when we walked home with it, otherwise we'd have jumped on. Weekend bus service is the pits here.

One thing that makes me chuckle even more than people driving to the gym is watching people in gym parking lot circle or wait for a parking spot close to the door. :)

I got a coupon for a free fitness check at local gym. Every thing was exceptional except for flexibility. Then came the sales pitch for membership. 750$ + 25$ a month. Got to that level of fitness by riding bicycle. Promptly went out and bought a new bike worth 750$ then my old one and started to do stretches before riding.

I could never understand those people who run before going to work in their cars. You can get an extra hour of sleep by riding your bike to work.

Yeah--as I said before, this factor is what originally got me into cycling. Another option for some people is to walk to work. I used to do that, still do once in a while. A guy I work with told me he is going to start running to work. Combining your commut with your workout is efficient and fun, and a good way to keep motivated.

It's a world where you have to lock your bike up wherever you can. Find a place - don't blame the world for not accommodating you.

Y'all have bike-parking problems? Go to Amsterdam and the university precinct... you'd be lucky to find a spot to hitch a bike because of all the other BIKES!

To the OP, you can like it or lump it. You are taking advantage of a free offer. If you don't like the bike-parking service, you can arrange a polite meeting with the gym manager to see what could be arranged, or... go somewhere else. Simple, really.

The world hasn't caught up with us yet, therefore, no bike rack and/or can't take bike inside is not the end of the world. Melodramatic speeches and exits will fall on deaf ears and give us all a bad name, and people will find threads like this on the internet and think we're all a bunch of whiny ******s.

Ya think so?

Perhaps it would help not to use the pronouns "us" and "we" so carelessly when referring to other cyclists.

There are some circumstances where gym equipment is usefull. I work out of town a couple of days a month and often use the exercise bike in the hotel gym. I would never think of using one in Toronto. I'm planning to travel with a folding bike at some future point, but I might leave it home and still use the hotel gym in winter.

There's a local guy who has been a competitive runner since grade school. He has taught at a high school for many years. He lives 6.5 miles from the school and runs to and from work, every day. He drives to the school each weekend and leaves a supply of clean clothes in his locker. He takes a shower after arriving in the morning and is certainly more awake than most of the students for his first class. No matter what else he does for the day, he's guaranteed at least 13 miles of running. If he were a bike racer instead, he'd probably ride to and from school. Nowadays, his savings of gas money are more significant than ever.

When I was in grade school, we lived one mile from school. I got in the habit of running the distance twice a day, starting in Kindergarten. Sometimes in the Winter, I'd cross-country ski the distance, even though when the weather was extreme, the wimps in the administration would often close the schools. I believe this early involvement in self-propulsion, is what made me prime in later years to completely quit operating motor vehicles.

Because most people in North America are now born and brought up with a mindset that everyone must drive everywhere. They consider it an integral part of their lives. They would feel handicapped even at the thought of not being able to drive a mile to the gym.

This response requires this hilarious pic---again!
