Mountain Biking - Old frame - disk brake adapter?

I am riding a '99 frame which has no provision for mounting a disk brake caliper on the rear. Does anyone know of an adapter to allow me to do so? I really like my frame, but would prefer disks on both ends. Thanks and keep the rubber side up.

i have seen the brackets b4... but fr the life of me cannot remember where?!?!?! however speaking personally are they not dangerous? lol i mean the force you are gonnaput on the bracket from braking is phenomenal.. thats why they made IS (international Standard) mounts welded to the frames.

Thanks for the TherapyComponents web link. I reviewed and then spoke with Brian about same. He is quite a knowledgeable and convivial person. Ordered one to convert my MTB to disks front and rear. Going with Avid mechanical on both ends. I'll report back on my experience with both the adaper (weighs less than 1/2 a pound) and the brakes. Should be fun. Wonder how they will work in our crazy 10 degree temperatures? Guess I'll see in another week.

Good call on the Avids. They're good fresh out of the box and they only get better once they're seated.

OK - its done. Got the Avid mechanical disk brakes from JensonUSA, Mavic 317 disk rims on XT hubs from Performance and the rear disk brake adapter from Component Therapy. All work as advertised and I am very happy. Brake and adapter directions are very straight forward. Only item that was a problem is that XT rear hubs have a 17mm lock nut and it is difficult to find a 17mm cone wrench. So resorted to taking the wheel to my LBS to loosen this nut. Other than that everything went together works just as advertised. I have taken a couple of laps around my local roads, but the real test comes tomorrow on our Sunday morning MTB ride. We usually do about three hours and get in about 20 miles here in south Jersey. That should provide a reasonable test. It anything doesn't work out, I will post. If all goes well I will say no more other than to state that the Avid brakes and the adapter both seem to be quite high quality products. And Shimano and especially Mavic always are.

Worked very well this ride. We rode through mud, muck, ice frozen under water and water today. No problems with any of it. Everything worked just like the Mfgr's said they would. Can actually stop after the wheels get wet. Something that I am not used to. I give it my highest "one day of use" recommendation. It is continues to work well then it will get my unqualified highest recommendation.

i've encountered the same problem. i naively thought the holes in my frame above the rear axle dropout on my big sur were disc mount tabs. i was sadly mistaken and have been looking for a few hours trying to find options to mount my nice shiny avid mech discs on my rear wheel (the front went off without a hitch - whew!!). i have seen three possibile solutions in two "methods" if you will.

the first two use the same principle, a bar attached to the v-brake mount, woodman components disco system (http://www.woodmancomponents.com/products/items/2k2/disc/disco_sy.html) and the above mentioned brake therapy solution. i also found this part from some company in japan, a2z, A2Z DM-UNI (http://www.a2zcomponents.com/fastop.htm). not so sure about this, but i found a few on ebay for 50 bucks. i don't like this option because you have to run the quick release skewer through a hole in the part, in my opinion negating the usefullness of the qr in the first place. plus, i can't quite see how the A2Z product attaches to the frame. the pictures don't really help either.

I am using a Brake Therapy rear disk adpater on my HT with an Avid mechanical disk and it really works as advertised. Is quite expensive, though, at $150. But, like a say, it is very high quality and I am using for the second season without a hint of a problem. And the Avid brakes are absolutely the best. Brake Therapy's phone is 765-528-2138 and you can find them doing a Google search. They are a design/machine shop that specializes in high performance braking items for all things wheeled.

i will be doing the same with my bike. my fork supports disc, but the frame does not. so i need it for my rear
