Fifty Plus (50+) - The 50+BFBS Index - A CRITICAL value

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The 50+BFBS Index - A CRITICAL value (Beta version 1.0)

Here is a topic that has NEVER been on BFN, ever. SO, it doesn't appear that we have run out of topics yet!

It relates to the CRITICAL 50+ BFBS Index.

This is the TRUE measure of your bicycling/posting success.

The instruction for calculating your 50+BFBS Index are:

1. Locate a recent post - (or go to "Who's Online" (http://69.16.211.161/online.php)and click on your name there and skip steps 2 and 3 below.)

2. Click on your name in the left hand corner, i.e., DnvrFox

3. On the drop down screen, click on "view public profile"

4. There you will see two critical figures. The date you enrolled in BFN, and your total number of posts.

5. Estimate the number of bicycle miles since the date you enrolled.

6. Divide the total miles since enrollment by the number of posts since enrollment.

The resulting number will be your 50+BFBS Index.

For example, for DnvrFox

Enrolled 08-30-01. Estimated mileage over almost 5 years - 21,000 miles. Number of posts = 6,570. My 50+BFBS Index is 21,000/6,570 = 3.2,or 1 post for every 3.2 miles ridden.

(And Big Paulie, you have to count ALL of your multiple personalities as ONE!)

So, what is your 50+BFBS Index? The lower the number, the greater of a BS'r you are

1 or below you are so full of BS that it is practically impossible for you to get on your bike!

1-2 Man, you like to say a lot

2-3 OK, so you enjoy chatting

3-4 Normal IMHO!

4-5 Sort of a quiet soul

5 or more - Who are you, again?

If your 50+BFBS Index is greater than 5, kindly just tell us what it is by posting the index to this thread, instead of finding fault with the poll. Just remember, this is supposed to be fun, and, well, the internet is pretty much make-believe, anyway. And this is the Beta version 1.0 of this critical Index! Thanks.

I've not kept close enough records of miles ridden (we just passed our 1st year of steady riding) to have a clue. My 'partner' gave me a heart rate monitor and that's when I really started to record rides but that was halfway through last year. Perhaps my ignorance of how many miles I've ridden is a sign that I should quit reading/posting and only check 50+BF once a week when the weather is too hot/cold/rainy to ride...except I work in front of a computer screen so many hours that my imagination needs the stimulus of the forum.

I think you are avoiding the issue. No excuses, now.:D

I think that the scale is skewed too far to the low numbers. I commute to/from work, which makes for 30 miles per day. I probably get in more miles than most this way, but I can't believe that I am on the very edge of the distribution. To get my index down to one post for every 5 miles I'd have to be posting 6x per day!

Well, I need to start correcting in both areas... more miles and less posting.

I came in at about 1.6 as an estimate... and that is only because I gave myself credit for exercycle miles.

Of course, with 813 messages now, I need to do many many miles to significantly change my rating.

Well, all you have to do is just tell us your index. The poll isn't magic or anything. I first thought about having no poll, just having folks tell us their index. The poll was sort of a last minute thingie.

So, what was your index, anyway? :D

okay, okay so since 4/28/06 (join date) I've ridden 200.27 miles and posted 34 times so my index is 5.89

perhaps I'm okay or maybe I'm not - at least you didn't ask how many times we read but don't respond...

Total miles since 09-24-05 = 1,550+
(Actual odometer reading since then on 1 of 2 bikes.)

Total number of posts = 150 (including this one)

CRITICAL 50+ BFBS Index for Ned Goudy = 10.40

4.8 is my number. But my initials (first & middle names) are BS. So, does that count? My wife is quick to remind me that my graduate degree is an MHS, making me not only full of BS, but also a master of horse......S....

Interesting how DnvrFox sets up a BS "index" in such a way that he falls into the "normal" range.

Coincidence or wishful thinking??? You decide! :D

That kind of thinking and planning is what makes me "normal."

Eat your heart out, DG. :D

And, I put my numbers out for ALL to see. Where are yours?

Someone is probably going to have to help Gary with the math.......

I'm at 10.3 with 903 posts and about 9300 miles........I wonder when I first joined the fray. I guess I now know what I was doing on Halloween, 2004. Gosh, it doesn't seem that long ago.

What I really want to know is Gary's index!!!

Well, I can't give a precise number, but here's a first-order approximation:

DeeGee's posts to date: 1301

DeeGee's miles in the past year: 2500 (per the "First Full Year is History" thread)

DeeGee's period of membership on 50+: Approximately a year.

So, I calculate 2500/1301 = 1.9, give or take.

DeeGee's contributions to the total volume of 50+BFBS: Priceless. :)

And I was thinking I posted too much!

764 posts and 3302 miles. Not enough posting or too many miles, or do I have that backwards? Interesting concept though. I used to post more before sydney was struck down by that kid. Loved his posts and always found myself replying.

How can 3.0 to 4.0 be normal there is only 8% in that range
normal should be where the most riders are @ 72% that would be > 5.0
but then I still think 1 and 1 is 3.

The first rule of the 50+forum - Don't take things like this seriously.

I designed the poll. I thought up the Index. I get to determine what is normal.

Don't like it?

Wouldn't post so much if you got out on the bike more often- which is my problem.

Another problem- I was in BF before I joined 50+ and I did not post much before then. so my 3.1 will have to drop a bit on the 50+ forum only.

I think EVERYONE is just fine & DeeGee's posts are entertaining enough that I always see what he's posting next...my own BS index is just enough that my name is relatively unknown & my impact minimal.

Since all of this is hypothetical hyperspace internet babble, I will now reveal to all that I am actually a 10-year-old neutered Siamese cat adopted post-retirement from the university's veterinary neuroscience cloning program by an owner that leaves her computer on all the time with a truly marvelous Kittyspeak to Humanspeak translation program on it. BUT THE LACK OF OPPOSABLE THUMBS MAKES SHIFTING BETWEEN ALL CAPS AND normal more difficult than one might expect. Fortunately my testtube progeny have articulated dewclaws instead.

OH NO!!! it took on a life of it's own!

It happens sometimes!

How about just a touch of reality?

This is a stupid, made-up "index" - probably just as valid as many of the economic "indexes" by which our government supposedly runs our economy or whatever. That is, not valid at all!

It is JUST FOR FUN!

DG's, mine or whomsoever's frequent posts are just as valid and important as those who post less. It is simply one more factor of human variability. DG has unique strengths in doing interesting, enjoyable (hey, sometimes they are even funny) worthwhile posts and questions. I have some strengths in getting things organized and having some different, slightly nefarious ideas. Others have other strengths, which is what makes the whole thing and life interesting. It would be BORING if we were all the same, all posted the same number, all rode the same miles. Differences are what make the "difference.":D

Yet, somehow, some folks start believing that this IS reality, failing to distinguish nonsense from important things in life!

Think this is bad? Just try jousting a bit with the Underwear Nazi, as he and I have traditionally done over the years. All sorts of folks get serious and excited and bent out of shape over wearing or not wearing underwear while bicycling. So much so, that we no longer joust any more. Sigh!

OH NO!!! it took on a life of it's own!
ho ho ho ho ho - are we not truly 50-plussers in our inability to distinguish hyperspace lunacy, a bit of fun, or whether we're posting too much, too little, just right or riding too much, too little or just right?

this is truly an index that has almost no meaning & Dnvr, you've stated so several times...but I have found it amusing to carefully calculate my mileage & then divide by my posts over time to discover that my index actually has no meaning whatsoever in whether I post or unpost, camp or decamp, plane or deplane...

everybody have a good weekend - I'm headed to the 78th annual Holland-Jackson reunion in sunny Lampasas, Texas to hang wid' de cuzzins...

I think I have the perfect balance of miles versus posts, the problem is I spend to much time reading other's posts.
